Hello!

I think we’ve all been there, a sudden climatic change in weather forces us into a mild case of panic as we realize that last seasons favourite garments aren’t ready for it.

Maybe you’ve put something back in the wardrobe thinking that you’ll get around to sending it to the dry cleaners, fix that loose button, wash your knits when you have time, but realistically, you never do, as there is always something more important or demanding of your time. So we forget about it.

Now is the precise time to get into your wardrobe and get organized.

Start by bringing out everything that represents a basic core item. These are the skirts, trousers, jeans, jackets, the items that form the basis of an outfit.

Check them over for stains, repairs, missing items, wear and tear.

Next is to TRY them on.

Whether you want to accept it or not, our summer clothes are usually looser than our winter ones, and it might just be that some of your last season clothes are not fitting you as well as they did last year. Do they need altering? Set them aside, as well as anything else that needs attending to.

Look at these items and decide whether you have the basis for clever coordination. Can you intermix these items to create different combinations? This is important if you want to have a truly workable wardrobe.

Next bring out the individual pieces that help bring these together. Your tops, shirts and knits. Do these need attention? Try to put outfits together with what you have. For example, take one skirt, one top and one jacket. Can you change the bottom, or the top and still have an outfit with the jacket, and vice versa with the skirt? If you do this with all of your core items you will begin to see where the gaps are. Maybe you need new camisoles, t shirts, leggings, knits to help change the look of these core items?

Do you have accessories to complete the outfit?

Accessories can change the look of most items and also allow you to express your personality. It might be that all you need is a new on trend necklace, belt, scarf or pair of boots. A handbag in a new season colour might also help you update your new season look. The point I am making is that if you don’t go through the process of sorting through the items you haven’t worn since the weather changed, when the change arrives, you might just be caught high and dry with having nothing to wear and end up heading out to the stores in a complete panic and spending money on items you might be making a mistake on.

A wardrobe audit is the clever way of being prepared for a shopping expedition. Not only will you be prepared and know what you need, but you wont be tempted to spend dollars on items that you really don’t need. You’ll also save considerable time too, something all of us as busy mums don’t have ever enough of.

  • For the first time at the change of season (winter to spring) I packed my winter clothes and shoes away. I’m now thinking I need to bring them back out and put my summer clothes away. However, Melbourne weather is so fickle – hot one day, wintry the next. I’m not sure if the time is right yet. Love your tips, though. I’ll definitely follow them. Great advice.

  • My teenage daughter has just cleaned up her clothes and dumped the unwanted clothes in my room, and purged my cupboard of anything she found interesting and fitted her. I was amused to see her take one top that used to belong to my mum! I hope to find the time to sort my cupboard, but I fear I’ll be resorting to the same 3 outfits in and out of the washing basket. And nothing but a wedding ring for accessories (Oh to find the energy…)

  • It is always another job to do, isn’t it? I look in my wardrobe with good intentions but always forget to follow up. I find charity shopping for clothes is fun, inexpensive and if you have an open mind, it is a great way to supplement your wardrobe.

  • Very helpful tips – at this time of the year I am always looking behind the summer clothes for warmer ones and coats, jumpers etc, to go with them as I did this last weekend when it came in very cold.

  • If only I was able to organise myself to do just that. Seems everytime I try to start something like this – somebody needs my help, time, etc. or it’s time to get another meal ready. Oh well, maybe someday.

YUK can’t believe folk would leave unwashed clothes in the wardrobe and loose buttons what’s with that? I always restitch after ironing or when I notice it.
    Interesting article though.
