Footage shows father tossing his crying toddler into a lake to teach him to swim.

The Daily Mail shared a video clip showing the crying boy screaming in fear as he lands in the water before struggling to keep his head up.

The clip starts with the father dragging the young boy into the water as he frantically kicks and cries.

The man then pulls the boy’s top off, before perching him above his head and then launching him into the water.

While it looks harsh, this method of teaching is actually quite popular across the US and UK.

Last year we shared the story of a Melbourne swim school that attracted some controversy with its extreme teaching techniques. Read more about it here.

Extreme? How did you learn to swim?

  • No way! That kind of thing breaks a trust you can never get back. I would no in a million years put my kid through that kind of fear and trauma.

  • I know one swimming school taught little ones to swim by putting them in the water. He is now a well known coach of our swimming teams. They were pushed in at shallow end of a pool. There was competent swimming teacher in the pool. The demonstrations I have seen on Video the child has tried to reach something, the person holding it has moved back a fraction then slipped in. The small toddler fell face downwards but rolled herself over in the water. She did the normal strokes with her arms as well as she could but couldn’t kick both legs the same. They were hoping she was going to make it to the edge of the pool. But she was going in circles part of the time because she couldn’t kick evenly. When they could tell she was tiring and definitely going to the edge they lifted her out.

  • Can’t say i agree with this method. I feel all it would teach is a fear of water.

  • I can see NO benefit from this …children should be taught how to float, and learn strokes in a caring environment.

  • I’ve never had swimming lessons. My kids did. Not like this though. I know a guy who taught his kids to swim like this….in Australia! He’s the type of guy no one wanted to go boating with because of the fear of bring thrown in the water
