‘Little Girl’ (5) has been missing her dad, who is on his latest interstate trip, more so than usual. Though she has been texting ‘I LOVE YOU dad’ and ‘Goodnight dad’ and chatting to him, she is still feeling it. As a treat the kids have been sleeping with me and celebrating Upside Down Day, where the kids get dinner for breakfast and a cooked breakfast for dinner.

These usual measures haven’t had the impact I was hoping for. So yesterday we drove to the airport for a little plane-spotting. ‘See that jet coming in to land now? Just two more sleeps and Dad will be flying in on one of those’ I said. That seemed to do the trick and off we went home.

As I prepared dinner, I was happy to hear her busily playing in her room.
‘OK, time for dinner go wash up please’ I called out.
‘Just one more minute Mum’ came her reply.

Next ‘Little Girl’ came in with a bunch of shopping bags. ‘Mummy I’ve had a really, really good idea! I packed us all up so we can surprise Daddy. Can we go back to the airport now and go on one of those planes?’
She had indeed packed luggage for us all, including our toothbrushes and nappies for the baby. I’m pretty sure her Dad has no doubt how much she loves him.

  • I’m glad you’ve recorded this story to remember in years to come. She obviously adores you both. My Miss (almost) 3 packed her bag ready to go to “BIG SCHOOL” with her siblings this week, complete with lunchbox, hat, change of clothes and books. Will have to look into playgroups, I think.

  • I occasionally mind a little boy who was around 2y.o. when his Dad had to fly away for a week or so. Having a passion for planes and always asking to go outside to watch them fly overhead I have to admit I was dreading there being tears and a heart broken little boy. Much to my relief he said “Daddy go plane”.
