A MAN has been refused bail for allegedly trying to abduct a seven-week-old baby boy lying next to his mother on the beach.

The 38-year-old man, unknown to the woman, tried to grab the baby from the towel on which he was lying around 6pm at Bronte Beach. His mother pushed the man away, police were told.

News.com.au reports the pair were involved in a struggle before lifeguards intervened and police arrived shortly after and arrested the man.

The woman, 31, suffered minor injuries but did not seek medical treatment.

The man was refused bail when he faced Waverley Court charged with attempted child abduction and common assault on Tuesday.

He will appear again in Central Court on February 16.

Police are continuing with their inquiries and are urging any witnesses who have not yet provided a statement to come forward.

The Police report states:
A man has been charged after allegedly trying to abduct a baby at Bronte Beach on Monday night.

About 6pm (8 February 2016), a 31-year-old woman was at the beach with her seven-week-old son lying on a towel beside her.

Police have been told a 38-year-old man who was unknown to the woman walked up to her and attempted to take hold of the baby.

The woman pushed him away and the pair were involved in a struggle before nearby lifeguards intervened.

Police from Eastern Suburbs Local Area Command arrived a short time later and arrested the man.

The woman suffered minor injuries but did not seek medical treatment.

The man has since been charged with attempted child abduction and common assault.

He appeared before Waverley Local Court yesterday (Tuesday 9 February 2016), where bail was refused.

The man is next due to appear before Central Local Court on Tuesday 16 February 2016.

Police are continuing with their inquiries and are urging any witnesses who have not yet provided a statement to come forward.

  • It’s not even safe to have your baby lying beside you now. The poor Mum must have been petrified. Glad she was able to fend the guy off and lifeguards came to their rescue. Relieved he didn’t get bail. He should be charged with assault and emotional + physical abuse of the Mum, attemped abduction of the baby and whatever charges they can charge him with. Not just fines and good behaviour bond either.

  • This is such a serious crime – I dread to think what his plans were for the poor innocent baby. How terrifying for the mother! so very glad he was caught and that bail was refused.
