Hello!

My two kids (between 1.5 and 4) have been constantly sick with various bugs since the beginning of the year. I know that it is coming into our house because our youngest started daycare this year, and she passes everything on to our toddler, but it is weekly!!

Do any other mums have any advice on how to avoid daycare lurgies and how to boost immune systems? We’ve started on probiotics but they have not helped yet …

  • Vitamin C mainly – ideally from fresh organic fruit but you can also get supplements like powder and add it to a smoothie or vitamin gummies which kids are more likely to actually eat some also include Zinc which is great too. Vitamin D is very important again colds etc so making sure they get some sunshine without being out for too long to get burnt, start with 5-10 minutes no sunscreen regularly then move up to about 15 minutes, 20 minutes etc if your skin isn’t used to getting the sun it will burn way easier. Sunscreen blocks the vitamin D. If really worried put sunscreen on the face but leave the arms and legs for a little time without so the skin is getting the sun. If they want to keep playing then apply sunscreen after some time already in the sun don’t block all sun all the time. Some other great immunity boosters you can add to foods meals like pastas, curries etc tumeric, garlic you can barely taste them. Add garlic and basil to homemade pizzas. Cut out processed foods (processed meat, cereal, junk food, anything with added sugar. flavours, colours) I’m not saying forever it’s nice to enjoy a treat sometimes but give the body a break from digesting things that are bad for it. You could also try detoxing with bi-carb soda and epsom salt baths. Using magnesium spray can also be beneficial and it’s much easier and more fun for kids than taking an oral supplement. Summed up my recommendations: Vitamin C, Zinc, Vitamin D – Sunshine, Tumeric, Garlic, Basil, Magnesium. With cutting out processed (fake) food. My daughter was rarely ever sick as a child only once in her first 2 years she had a cold. I focused mainly on wholesome natural foods fruit & veg. Anytime she got over a fruit or veg I would just find other ones she was interested in and keep mixing it up.

  • My son has hardly had a cold until this year when starting pre-kinder. he was sick for 3 weeks with a croupy cough, high temp for 48 hours, and a cough that would not leave. The pharmacist recommended Inner Health Plus capsules and he’s been having one a day. She recommended he keep taking them for a while – especially into the new year when he starts Kindergarten. He’s also on a multivitamin with fish oil.

  • the kids immune systems get stronger by fighting bugs!

  • Doctor always told me that vitamin C is very good for kids, mine take them daily with multivitamins…..they still catch the odd flu but it can be good for their immune system to build up so they can fight off nasty bugs.

  • What you have just stared on with the kids sounds like it is a good thing long term and once it kicks in should work. My son is in day care twice a week and he picks up lots of colds but i have also found during the cooler weather if i put a short sleeved knitted vest under his jumper, it has helped with the colds and keeps his cheast warm while in care.
