Hello!

Hi Mums I’m looking for some advice on moving to sippy cups. We use the Avent range and was wondering if any mums started on the bottles and then moved onto the sippy cups not just for water but with formula as well. What age? How did they like the Avent cups and spout? Thanks!

  • We used sippy cups, small ones to start then bigger ones. One of the reasons is when travelling in a warm atmosphere they get thirsty quicker. There a long stretches of roads where there is nowhere you can stop. As the toddler progresses he/she will ask to have the lid left off. You can switch to pop top lids on small bottles such as the ones you buy fruit drink or water at some places. Our 2 1/2 year old knows she has to use them in the car, otherwise if she spills it the seat or floor will get wet., and believe me you won’t get rid of the smell quick enough, especially if it seeps into the upholstery or carpet.

  • Take n toss but not for milk cause lets in too much air

  • The comments are interesting to read!

  • The absolute best sippy cups are the take and toss or Nuby (they all connect to each other)
That’s what we just one day gave to our daughter with her milk in it and she eventually decided it was okay. Only took a day or two. She always had water in a drink bottle….just moving the milk she wasn’t too happy about.

  • I’ve been trying a sippy cup with handles since 5 months. We’re at 6 months now and my son still isn’t very interested. Personally I think he’s a bit lazy sometimes and probably thinks “how dare you expect me to do this myself!”. Perseverance I guess.

  • We offered a Sippy cup when we offered food from 5 months. Milk can make some lids gross after a while but there are some cheaper cups you can just buy replacement lids.

  • let them have the cup with their meal and they will get better at using it

  • Just don’t make a fuss -most bub’s really want to be grown up, especially when they see other kids drinking from cups. I went straight to Tupperware plastic cups with the sippa lids – and then gradually took the lids off. 20 years later the cups and lids are still in circulation with my cousins kids xxx

  • I used a small plastic cup ,then got my child to sit with me while drinking & only using small amounts .

  • MagMag was amazing, not sure if they still exist. I also had the Tupperware cups, as they had really good sippy lids, that could be taken off, and the cups last longer than the kids need them to. I am not a huge fan of plastic, but these are great

  • i started when my daughter was one we use the plastic buby sippy ones then at about 18months moved on to straws my 3 yo still likes the odd bottle though

  • I don’t think I ever used a sippy cup for formula as I didn’t give it past 12 months.

  • My daughter was breast fed with the occasional bottle. We moved to sippy cups – any brand we have take and toss, aldi and a few other brands. Some are easier to use than others and the more expensive ones with fancy spouts, age ratings etc seemed to be disliked the most by my child

  • I just gave water in the non spill sippy cups, it went very easy for us as my daughter loves water

  • The sippy cups with teet like spouts are great to move to from bottles because they still have to suck to draw liquid – I found they drowned themselves sucking too hard on a normal spout, when moving straight from bottle. Straws were good too for the same reason
