Hello!

Does anyone know as a godmother do I need to get the child an “extra” special christening gift or an ordinary gift like a pewter cup?

  • I wouldn’t think you need to get something extra special. I would lean towards something you can engrave so it’s personalised

  • A jewellery box, a gold cross and or a necklace.

  • A special teddy bear to comfort a little one through the years is special.

  • I gave my god-daughter a beautiful photo frame with a matching jewellery box and had an engraved plaque attached for a personal touch. Obviously she is too young to use/enjoy them yet but her mum put a photo of us from the christening in the frame and I popped a note into the jewellery box with all my love and best wishes for a long and happy life and wonderful memories together.

  • I think it depends upon the role that the family expect you to play. Are you there just for the ceremony, or do they expect some on-going connection? If its just a ceremony thing maybe it should be more formal – spoon/jewelery/gown etc.; if there is to be some on-going connection then maybe something more personal that might actually be useful might be good (like some books/toys you might use when you come to babysit or a journal/photo book where every year on the christening anniversary you or the parents can add a photo etc.).

  • It sometimes comes down to traditional. We are of italian background and the godparents generally buy the child’s outfit and a gold chain and cross. It really is an individual thing.

  • A book of bible stories for children is a lovely keepsake.

  • Something a bit more sentimental from the Godmother is a good idea given how special the role is. Even something like a book (eg, The Places You’ll Go) is quite meaningful. Is it for a boy or girl? If a girl maybe a charm for a bracelet she can wear when she’s older?

  • My sons godfather purchased our child a colourful childs bible with a lovely personalised paragraph in it.. Also a lovely gold cross necklace which we have set aside for when he is older..

  • Any present is good – being a godmother is wonderful and special.

  • Anything from the godmother will be special. My lot have cups, spoons , moneybox and cutlery sets from their god parents inscribed with the dates or who their god parent are/were.

  • up to you and your budget? pewter scroll is nice, or a chain with a cross

  • All my little ones were given a piece of jewellery that they can cherish forever. They have been engraved with a little heart and the godparents name that gave it to them. The heart reduces the cost of engraving ;)

As they are getting older they look at it and the girl’s say my wrist must have been so tiny. The boys got silver necklaces with their starsigns as a pendant.

  • I have bought all my grandkids their own personalized teddy bears that have their birthdate & names on the teddies paws.

  • I like the idea of a necklace or brooch (with the child’s name engraved on it). Something that the child will always keep.
