Hello!

I love fabric softener and recently bought some washing powder with this added in but still add extra fabric softener, is this necessary?

  • Fabric softer is not really necessary. It does add a nice fragrance and used to use it all the time. Was becoming expensive for me. I do still use it from time to time and haven’t noticed a difference of “softness”.

  • When it’s added to the washing powder, you shouldn’t have to add fabric softener.
But the question is if we should use fabric softener at all !
Softeners are not even good for clothing. They can stain whites and leave residue in machines. The soft coating builds up over time, impeding absorption, which is why athletic wear should never be laundered with a softener.
Vinegar softens the wash as well and reduces the build up in your washing machine drum

  • I hardly ever use fabric softener.

  • Fabric softeners are suppose to be added on the last wash . Read instructions on label and ring up the consumer helpline if it doesn’t say . You shouldn’t if not needed .

  • Vinegar. Never heard that before

  • Must admit I don’t use fabric softener, just another expense.

  • I’m addicted to the smell of it and clean clothes so I would be adding it. I was told NOT to add it to my towels as it reduces their absorbency (maybe it’s the type of towel I bought?)

  • Thanks MOM 105503 for sharing your handy vinegar tip with Mom’s.

  • I personally wouldn’t add it.

  • I use vinegar as my fabric softener, it is fantastic, really softens but also gets rid of all the residual soap.

  • I don’t use fabric softener at all but I definitely wouldn’t add more if your powder has it in.

  • I would not bother adding any extra fabric softener to your wash if it is already in your washing powder. I only ever add a very small amount of fabric softener to loads of washing.

  • I tend to use fabric softner with the washing powder. I usually only put a small amount in for clothes but put more in for towels and sheets because I love the fresh scent when jumping into a clean bed or wrapping a clean towel around you after a shower.

  • I would say adding extra is probably overkill. I very rarely use fabric softener as it tends to ruin the fabric of your clothes quicker, so I’m guessing a double dose would do this even faster. I only use it for the nice smells.
