  • My son does this to the point of losing half his finger nail – wish I had a solution

  • Oh my daughter does too, as she is not a bit older I am telling her how gross it is about what is under neath the nail etc…. and making it her choice and celebrating when she grows one etc…. but it can be so frustrating.

  • i liked scottie’s comment a lot. my five year old bites nails, even foot nails…its so awful. its been a long time too. i remember i used to do it but recovered quickly

  • There are some good comments here, how did you end up going?

  • there is nothing you can do except tell them to take them out when you notice

  • Have you tried putting bandaids on each and every one of their nails?

  • what did you end up using

  • there are some good comments here

  • Sometimes they grow out of it. I did, but then again my husband didn’t.

  • Tell them that the dirt on the hands and nails make them sick,
The dirt off the floor and sweat from when they have had their shoes on is now in their mouths.
Explain to them that it’s a dirty habit.
Like the idea that they could snack on carrots or a fruit reward.
Can you keep their hands busy play Lego, knit, write, scribble, hold a ball, a pen.
Make the kids Conscious of this problem, make the write it down so it really sinks in.
Figure out a replacement for this habit.. try carrot sticks, a sugarless sweet, plaiting hair on a doll, plaiting string.. etc

  • I want the answer to this too!
My daughter is 12 & really wants to stop biting her nails. I told her that if she stops biting, & grows them, I’ll take her to have her nails done professionally for her next birthday, in July. She’s doing well so far! :-)

  • U could try the bad tasting nail polish

  • kids do grow out of the habit, nail polish worked for my friend

  • Hope some of the suggestion below help

  • Not sure how you worked with the nail paint…I’d devise an action plan. Use the paint and when they taste it it should act as a reminder to stop biting the nails. Introduce new things like an activity chart. So when they taste the paint, check the activity chart and choose something to do. Also have different snacks like carrot sticks which can also help stop the nail biting by having something else to chew on. And have a reward system associated with the action plan so that the change in behaviour is tracked and rewarded.
