Hello!

My son turned two in May and he still sleeps with the sides up on his cot, what is a good age to remove the sides and go from cot to bed? We still find him in interesting positions in his sleep but are not overly concerned with him falling out.

  • For me ot was on her second birthday and her big girl room was redone as apart of her special day.

  • It would be a good idea to have a bed that sits low to the ground for safety reasons and so the child can get in and out of bed by themselves.

  • My daughter was about three when she went from cot to bed.

  • Now would be perfectly fine and if your unsure then try taking the sides off as a trial

  • I would be putting the sides down every second/third night to see how he goes,i think he is at the right age.if all goes well, leave them down, dont forget to tell him,how clever he is!i was surprised at my little ones, the few times,my little ones fell out of bed,i found them still on the floor curled up,fast asleep, but it all fell into place.good luck, with it all..

  • You will just know when he is ready. My son at about 2 started climbing out which was dangerous so changed him. He still slept in the craziest positions in a normal bed but was safer than falling from the sides of a cot.

  • I think every child is different. I know my friend left her son in his cot till he was climbing out then just converted it to a toddler bed. Don’t feel pressured to move especially if right now you all are getting good night sleeps.

  • My son went into a toddler bed at 6 months as he just did not get on with his cot at all cried as soon as I put him down, so got a toddler bed and brought the bed sides and he slept like an angel.
I think it just depends on your and your child I don’t think there is a certain age that they have to be in a bed, just go with the flow and when your ready get a toddler bed and see how he goes in it.
    Good luck :)
