Hello!

When do you know if it is time to move ? A few mothers from my mother’s group are starting to move theirs into a bed but I don’t think my near 2 year old is ready for the cot side to come off as when I check on him at night, he is sleeping up against it. He also still sleeps in a sleeping bag with no sheet. He doesn’t climb out of it either. How to I know it is time, to take of the side?

  • My twin boys are 2 1/2 now. And I leave them in their cots as long as possible. So far they haven’t been climbing out of it. And are quite happy to sleep in it. There is no stress. As long as possible in a cot I reckon. That’s the safest option. And my boys also wearing sleeping bags.

  • I always thought it was at 2 years, but would probably wait until they started trying to climb out

  • I think my daughter was about three years of age when she moved into her bed.

  • Do it when you think they are ready. When it does come time, you can get a bed rail or a cheaper alternative a pool noodle put under the fitted sheet to hold it in place. If you have a spare mattress put it on the floor beside cot so they have something soft to land on if they do fall out

  • Keep him in the cot for as long as you can. If he starts to try to climb out and you’re worried he will actually make it over the side then move him. My first son was 2 and half and we moved him because we were expecting our second child so wanted him out of the cot before bugs came. When you do move him to a bed, you can get rails to stop him from rolling out of bed

  • Mine were about 3 yrs. They fell out of bed occasionally and I had soft stuff down so they didn’t hit the floor and they eventually get used to no sides. My first started screaming at night and so I removed the sides to lay on a camp stretcher next to him and hold his hand. The second had to hand it down to the next in line. The third was just getting big and needed a full size mattress.
