A 22-year-old man charged with assaulting a 10-month-old boy on a train.

The baby was strapped into his pram when he was allegedly assaulted by the man and sustained head injuries at Gosford on the New South Wales central coast.

The man, from Bellbird, near Cessnock, was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

It is believed the man was with the boy’s mother who was also on the train.

Police Super intendant Danny Sullivan said the baby was in a stable condition in Gosford Hospital.

“The child is now in the care of Family and Community Services. The young child had injuries to his head,” he said.

“It was clear to police on attending the train carriage that the child had physical injuries.

“I think, when it comes to domestic and family violence, it’s a matter that’s of serious concern to the entire nation.

“One of the things we say in relation to domestic violence is – don’t be a bystander.

“I can only praise those bystanders for their quick thinking.”

  • Once again, you think that your children will be safe on a train. How many assaults have there been on toddlers and babies lately on trains? Horrific!

  • This article fails to mention what was reported on the news. The assault went on for an hour before anyone stepped in. The bystanders were too scared to step in themselves. Which I can understand yo an extent. But the bystanders outnumbered the assailants. He was attacking a child do I’m guessing he’s a weak person anyway. Not sure I could have watched it for that long.

  • An animal treats its young better than that. Pricking the baby’s ears with ssefety pins if the baby has a bleeding condition he could have bled to death. A baby’s brain is like a sponge at that age, so I’ll be surprised if he hasn’t got a brain injury too.

  • Oh My Goodness!! I hate to think what he actually did but that is NOT an image I would want burned into my brain!! I hope that the people who had to witness this get help if they need it – and that the bub is NEVER returned to the care of than poor excuse for a man! That poor helpless baby.

  • this is scary. he was pricking the baby’s ears with safety pins, and hitting him in the head with a mobile phone. What is this world coming to?

  • If this child’s mother maintains contact with this 22 year old, then the child needs to be taken away from both of them – he is clearly not safe.

  • I’m glad indeed that people intervened. He’s just 10-months old, little one! And who is that man? Is the father or is that not clear?

  • Well done to those intervening bystanders – a hard thing to do but the right thing.
