An SA man isolated his primary-school aged stepdaughter, made her live in human excrement and allowed her only one shower a week.

He still believes he doesn’t deserve jail.

Daily Mail shared, the man, who cannot be named to protect the child’s identity, was handed an eight month jail sentence for one count of having failed to provide necessary accommodation, without lawful excuse, to a minor.

The man challenged his sentence in a bid rejected by Supreme Court Justice Trish Kelly, who said the punishment was appropriate for the crime, reports The Advertiser.

‘The full extent of the cruel and inhumane treatment this child was subjected to makes for very difficult reading,’ Supreme Court Justice Trish Kelly said.

She said it was not a matter of neglectful parenting, but rather a systematic abuse of the child that took place between January and September 2014.

‘This was not a case of neglectful failings by an incompetent parent who could not cope but rather a sustained and targeted course of deprivation and abuse of a young child.’

The man pleaded guilty on the first day of his trial, but claimed his prison sentence was ‘manifestly excessive’.

After teachers noticed the girl’s poor hygiene, they discovered she was not allowed to eat with the family, forced to stand by bins while her siblings played, and lived in a room littered with human excrement.

But the man fought to justify his actions, claiming the girl was argumentative and stole food.

  • my gosh! that is horrible that this child was conditioned to think that this behaviour was the norm. Thankfully the teachers identified the issue and got the child the help that she desperately deserved. I feel that the sentencing was way too lenient as this child will bear a lifetime of mental scars and possibly low self esteem.

  • Only 8 months for this type of systematic abuse and then this man fought to justify his actions ? This man disgusts me !

  • Maybe the girl’s behaviour started because she didn’t like the way her stepfather was treating her, and jsut maybe the mother wasn’t supporting her, either not at all or not enough to the girl’s liking. It is sometimes a sign of phsyocological abuse.
Just the way he is forcing her to live is child abuse of a few types. emotional, phsycological, and physical – the conditons in which she is living. S.A. Courts really treat such abuse very seriously.

  • 8 months is too easy on this man. Maybe he should be given the same treatment in jail and see how he like it. Not being sure on whether the child was just trying to voice her opinion or was very argumentative does not give the whole story but there are other punishments that are not abuse. Like no TV for a month, No friends over (although who would want to go to a place like that) or extra chores but no child should be degraded in this manner

  • I am glad the courts take these cases seriously and judge and punish accordingly. Hopefully the poor child will receive the support and care she needs and deserves as a human being. Every child deserves to be cared for and treated with respect and dignity.

  • Unfortunately this is not the only case where this happens. Sometimes one child in a family is the target.
