An SA man isolated his primary-school aged stepdaughter, made her live in human excrement and allowed her only one shower a week.
He still believes he doesn’t deserve jail.
Daily Mail shared, the man, who cannot be named to protect the child’s identity, was handed an eight month jail sentence for one count of having failed to provide necessary accommodation, without lawful excuse, to a minor.
The man challenged his sentence in a bid rejected by Supreme Court Justice Trish Kelly, who said the punishment was appropriate for the crime, reports The Advertiser.
‘The full extent of the cruel and inhumane treatment this child was subjected to makes for very difficult reading,’ Supreme Court Justice Trish Kelly said.
She said it was not a matter of neglectful parenting, but rather a systematic abuse of the child that took place between January and September 2014.
‘This was not a case of neglectful failings by an incompetent parent who could not cope but rather a sustained and targeted course of deprivation and abuse of a young child.’
The man pleaded guilty on the first day of his trial, but claimed his prison sentence was ‘manifestly excessive’.
After teachers noticed the girl’s poor hygiene, they discovered she was not allowed to eat with the family, forced to stand by bins while her siblings played, and lived in a room littered with human excrement.
But the man fought to justify his actions, claiming the girl was argumentative and stole food.
