Hello!

I was just wondering if anyone could suggest some budget friendly meal ideas for my family and I.
Something different to the usual Spag Bowl, Rissoles etc.
Thanks

  • Have you tried Google. I find rice and noodles dishes are simple. You can boil the rice then fry with egg, peas, ham for a simple meal , The first meal my friend showed me was Beef Stroganoff and you can have that with rice or mashed potato . Then she said you can put chicken liver instead of beef etc …I like vegetarian as sometimes too much meat is a bit boring so cook a lot of stir fried vegies which you can find at supermarkets or Asian grocery stores . Change the sauces on dishes and it looks different again and there is so many to choose from . Hot pot soups/stews are quite easy , all you need is meat , vegies and stock and all cook in one pot.

  • Curried sausages and sausages in onion gravy are yum. Buying the cheaper cuts of meat (lamb shoulder, pork belly, beef cheeks etc) and cooking them in a slow cooker. Brilliant! It always turns out so tasty, tender and moist

  • Fried rice is cheap and you can add leftovers to it.

  • I’ve done quiche and at the same time mini ones in muffin trays for lunch, that froze well. Also a hearty soup, my favourite is a thick creamy pumpkin. Tuna Mornay, you can use canned tuna, frozen peas, cook with rice. Curries are pretty cheap if u use the cheap slow cooked meat and bulk it up with veggies like potatoes and pumpkins. Pizza- especially when you make your own dough. Shepherd’s pie, jacket potatoes. We have many variations of barittos especially from leftovers. Also rice paper rolls, but they’re not too filling.
I also struggle with the same thing- cheap non repetitive meals

    Slow cook meals
    Carbonara
Pasta bake (good because you can use whatever you like)
    Noodles
    Stir fry
    Breakfast for dinner!
    French Toast
    Boiled Eggs
    Egg Sandwiches
    Fairy bread (for a treat)
    Quiche
    Scrambled Eggs
Roast chicken and the scraps can be used to make chicken gravy rolls
    Toasted Sandwiches
    Curry Sausages
    Bangers and Mash
    Pizza Scrolls

don’t forget that you can pick up pizza bread rolls for $1 in the arvy from woolies and $5 pizza from dominoes are always great for a cheap treat.

    • Wow, you’ve really thought about this! I love your list. I’m writing some down for myself :) After the roast chicken and the rolls, you can use the bones to cook up,some chicken soup. Yum!

  • Eggs often get forgotten as meal options, not just brekkie. They are inexpensive and fritattas with leftover veggies make a cheap, filling and nutritional meal. Same goes for salmon or tuna patties with leftover mash potato .
