Hello!

Our daughter has taken it upon herself to develop a nickname for herself. She has requested we use it at home and has informed her class teacher of her preferred name. Its quite a pleasant and appropriate nickname, but it does feel odd calling her something different! The class teacher asked us if we wanted everything changed and suggested we inform the school of the preferred name. We have done so, to support her. We always knew she was very determined and very decisive. Gotta love determination and individuality at 9!

  • My daughters nicknames are squid or Scooby Doo for my eldest daughter and yabbie for our youngest daughter. Would be interesting to know her nickname now.

  • A frind of mine chose his nickname t age 3. I didn’t actually know it was a nickname till I got his wedding invitation, and thought “who the hell is Charles and why is Susan marrying him? What happened to… Oh.” And I’d known him for decades!

  • I love a good nickname. I got mine when I was 14 and 20 years later I am still called by my nickname. It’s funny because my nickname is derived from my maiden name so people now don’t really get it because I have a different name. Also, I have 3 younger siblings and they all ended up with the same nickname so it made for lots of confusion when people rang the house as we were all going by the same nickname!

  • Do you mind me asking what her actual name is and what she is asking you to call her? My son is Riley but often gets Wardy as his last name is Ward. His dad and grandfather also get called Wardy so it is a family tradition. He loves it.

  • Do you plan to change it legally? There is an article about a child having their name changed to ‘Popcorn’!

  • Nicknames are great. Not used much in our family, but oddly enough were essential with my granddad.

  • Very good that she came up with the idea. Schools want indeed to know if kids have a preferred name, so it’s a great idea to inform them as soon as possible.
I guess that slowly you will get used to her nickname and the use will become automatic.
