I am wondering weather to buy a coffee machine and keep going back to the Nespresso but people warn me it is expensive as you have to buy their coffee an order it from them only, i.e. not from the supermarket. I would love to know what machines people have and the pros and cons of them. thanks.

  • You can buy Nespresso pods from the supermarket. I have an Aldi brand machine, a gift from my son. It was used a bit at first, but just sits in the cupboard now as I never was a big coffee drinker

  • I’m content with instant coffee, so I’m glad I don’t need a coffee machine.

  • To be quite honest, I haven’t found a good one yet. They never seem to make it hot enough and the mess that is made is often not worth the effort. I have gone back to using my plunger for ease and convenience and frothing my milk with a hand held frother! I hope you have better luck than I did with your hunt for a good machine and sorry I wasn’t much help!

  • I have a Nespresso and I love it. Yes you have to buy their pods. I buy a box of 5 tubes. 1 tube has 10 pods in it. So I buy 5 different flavours…50 pods in total and they last us for almost 3 months. We don’t have one every day. But you can also buy the cheaper compatible pods from the supermarket. Just make sure that you buy a box that’s says its compatible with Nespresso machines.

  • We have a sunbeam thermo block. I don’t actually use it but hubby loves it!

  • I do not think what kind of machine others use is important, but the way and manner you treat the machine. Enough care is needed when dealing with electronics.

  • We have a JURA, its a swiss coffee machine (automatic). You use full beans only – it rinds it and I don’t know how we lasted so long with out it! I’ts worth $1800, but got at the Boxing Day Harvey Norman Sales and paid $1000 with a $400 free coffee sample pack and another 6 months (6kilo) of coffee included (a choice of 7 Blends to choose). I think when you can only purchase one type of blend through one Company..its almost a trap, unless of course you love the coffee. Check out their range online and do your research before your final choice

  • We have a really expensive machine that is sitting in a cupboard, it’s a nespresso and they cost you 16 dollars each time you want to “descale” it as lights come up on your machine. I don’t drink coffee. He does. It’s sitting in a cupboard unused atm.

    • Oh no, how many times does it descale? Ours has descaled twice since getting. We have up to 4 cups between us a day, plus my eldest has his hot milk – I think in the long run it pays itself off if you purchase your coffee or hot drinks out. Now I make before I leave home

  • We have the Aldi machine and I find it so easy to use. There are heaps of different flavours and strengths for the pods – my son especially loves the hot chocolate ones. Every time my parents came to visit they wanted and “Aldi” coffee” so last mother’s day I bought the machine for mum as well. I even shocked some friends once. They were outside while I made the coffee and didn’t know what machine I had. They all had different strengths as I asked for their choice beforehand. The shock on their faces when I said they were drinking Aldi coffee was so funny. But it shows you don’t have to buy the most expensive machine to get the best. I will also say though – fresh beans will always be better but as a pod machine I love mine :)

  • I have a nespresso and a sunbeam cafe series. Both wonderful in their own rights, but I found the nespresso restrictive because I had to order the pods and I always ran out before I realised. The cafe series gives me the option to try all different beans and I prefer to buy locally.
