Hello!

Today, my daughter asked me for a snack. She wanted some jatz. I gave her some and thought nothing of giving my son one. He is nearly 12 months old. I watched him take a bite, and he was fine. I thought to myself clearly he is going to be ok with it. He had never been given one before.
Next minute, he’s silent. Thank god my husband was home. I panicked. I screamed to my husband he’s choking, my daughter started screaming and my husband was our saviour. He got the jatz out of my son’s throat, he coughed and coughed and vomited everywhere, but he was breathing again.
Now, I feel guilty. Not only am I the one who gave him the jatz to try, I was the one who panicked and froze and totally lost my cool.
Tomorrow, I am ringing about First Aid courses. I cannot let that happen again. I hope those who read my story, will also see the importance of a First Aid course or refresher courses. The last course I took was when I was starting high school a long time ago.
Thanking my lucky stars for my husband tonight!

  • wow that is scary hey! i think that the course is great! i can understand that when it is your own kid, you kind of go into a shock. If it was someone else’s, you would be calm and sort it. It is a natural reaction, Don’t feel bad! I think that if you do the course, you would pay special attention to the kid’s resus’ and be prepared to deal with it next time (i hope you won’t need to ever use that knowledge). I think that you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself. if hubby hadn’t been there, you would have stepped up, it would be instinct, so don’t think otherwise!

  • What a scarey experience! I totally agree with you, all parents should have first aid training, it’s something you never know when or if you’ll need it, but if you ever do need it your so grateful to know what to do. I’m nearly due for a refresher course, thanks for reminding me

  • So very true. I had a general first aid certificate, but also did a child’s/infant specific one too. Never needed to use it, but great to know what to do if ever the need arises. Glad your situation ended well!

  • These things do happen and do not feel guilty – you have done something positive about it and seeking out a first aid course is a good idea. Raising awareness is a positive too! Your little one is ok and breathe a big sigh! x
