A teenage boy has been charged with sexually assaulting a young girl at a shopping centre on the Coffs Coast yesterday.

Police were called to a shopping centre at Moonee Beach, following reports a seven-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted by an unknown male in the toilets.

Officers attended and arrested a 14-year-old boy, who had been detained in the car park by a member of the public.

Detectives from State Crime Command’s Child Abuse Squad conducted inquiries at the scene before taking the boy to Coffs Harbour Police Station.

He was charged with sexual intercourse with child under 10 years and two counts of indecent assault of a child under 16 years.

He has been refused bail to reappear at a children’s court tomorrow.

It is time we take notice and STOP putting our kids in danger. We need to go in pairs or hold on until you return home.

  • Sexual assault is happening to often to young children by teenagers not much older than the child they assault. Where do these teenagers get this kind of thinking it heart breaking for both kids either they get it from there parents or friends. This teenager will be tared with this for the rest of his life. Not to mention the poor little girl. I really hope with time she can get through this and live a normal life. I really don’t think sex education should be taught to teenagers in school until they are at least 16. At least they have a better understanding of sex at that age. I think this 14 year old should pay for this disgusting act on a inicent girl l really feel for her and her family

  • this infuriates me – kids see too much nowdays, are raised in childcare and often there are no filters on internet or movies, etc… I would love to go back to old Australia, where a parent stays home and raises the kids and teaches them respect, love and empathy – values.. Yes my opinion has the potential to open a can of worms and differing opinions, but so be it!

  • Public toilets should be safe places. It’s about time more was done to make them safe.

    • Agreed! He’ll get some sort of slap on the wrist given his age. 14!!! He knows right from wrong!! Let’s for arguement sake say that he’s mentally handicapped. Ok, so if he’s mentally handicapped and capable of such atrocities someone should supervise HIM while he’s out and about. At the park. At the shopping centre. In THE TOILET. He’s a mentally challenged minor. Someone should be responsible for HIM! We need to make our communities safe for those that do the RIGHT thing. We should be able to send our kids to the toilet without holding their hand! Shame them. Make them wear a goddamn lead for all I care. A warning sign tattooed on their forehead. Why should they have rights and anonymity while the rest of us suffer their cruel behaviours. Sick to death of the rights of perpetrators. Where are the basic human rights of this poor young girl or any other innocent victim of senseless and barbaric crimes?? Argh!!! Proven guilty? Wear it for life so everyone knows your a danger.

  • We need more parents rooms and we need to stop judging the parents who let there kids use the handicap toilets. My brother makes his kids sing the alphabet repeatedly if he can’t be directly in front of the cubicle his kids are in

  • What shocks me most is the age of the perpetrator. How does a 14 year old develop into a sexual predator? Is there hope of rehabilitation, or will he go on to offend again? We live in a very scary world.

  • My son and I still go to the public toilets together, we go to the disabled access one. I do have a disability and a car permit, so I am within my rights to use these facilities.
If I couldn’t though, then I’d stand right at the door and talk to him till he returns, the minute there’s silence, I’d go in. Just today I read of the public toilets in my town being regularly used by ice addicts to hit up…and they are within 50 metres of the police station. Nothing will stand in the way of my child’s safety, and I really don’t care if that’s embarrassing to others in the toilets.

  • I don’t let my 4 children go to the toilets alone. They go in pairs with me very close by or with me depending on age eldest is 11 and youngest is 4. Not just indecent acts but also drugs is a concern in public toilets.
