A Queensland teenager has been charged with setting his ex-girlfriend on fire.

Police allege the 17-year-old man used a flammable liquid to burn the 17-year-old woman following an argument in the South Brisbane suburb of Marsden on Friday.

He was charged with intending to cause grievous bodily harm after he was arrested on Sunday afternoon.

He is due to face Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday.

7 News understands neighbours heard the girl screaming for help and rushed to assist her.

It’s believed she was hosed down and her body was covered in plastic, until paramedics arrived at the scene.

The girl was placed into a medically induced coma in Royal Brisbane Hospital.

She will undergo treatment for burns that cover her arms, legs and upper body.

So horrifying! We wish her a full recovery.

  • We hear that one women is killed every week by domestic violece, we do not hear how many women are badly injured and perminantly disabled by domestic violence, nor do we hear the statistics on the deaths and injuries sustained by children. I think I will continue to support Rosie Batty with the Never Alone campaign and the Luke Batty Foundation, for without people like this DOMESTIC VIOLENCE would not be in the news at all, and laws would not be changed. It is a problem that can no longer be ignored. It must be reported so as Australia knows what an epedemic it really is, and get it erradicated from this country. We got rid of polio, so we can get rid of domestic violence.

  • How could anybody do that to another person?
An induced coma will stop the girl from moving at all. Removing the burnt dead skin is excrutiating. Hopefully they are able to do a substantial amount of it before they allow her to slowly regain consciousness. There will be intense physio to prevent loss of movement, also to help to gradually stretch her new skin as it will be very tight. We know of a man who was badly burnt in a work accident. His injury wasn’t as extensive as hers and it too him a long time to make a recovery. There is also the risk of infection even with antibiotics. Not necessarily the skin either. Even from hot water a person can get an infection such as a bowel infection.

  • What is happening? All this education and a spotlight on domestic violence, and it appears to be getting worse. I hope this young girl makes a full recovery.
