Decorating a room for your kid is always fun, especially if you are into home décor.

Still, there are some things that you have to be very careful about if you want them to enjoy the room completely. Lighting sure is one of the most important ones among them, and there’s much more to it than simply adding a lamp or two into the room.

Here’s what you need to consider when decorating your little one’s room:

Getting enough natural light

Most kids have fixed sleeping routines, no matter if they already go to school or not. They are usually awake during the day, and they go to bed in the evening. This means that you should make sure that there’s enough natural light during the day. This way, your child will be able to study and read during the day without having to turn on any lights. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to add a window or two if there’s not enough natural light in the room already.

Making sure it’s functional

One of the most important things about lighting in your kid’s room is it’s functionality. No matter how many lamps you put into the room, your child is not going to benefit from it if they don’t serve any purpose.

That’s why, when choosing lighting fixtures for your little one’s room, you have to make sure you go for something functional. You can start by assessing the whole room and detecting the areas that need some extra light during the day. That’s where a freestanding or a table lamp can be quite useful.

Extending the room

Another great thing about lighting is that, when used properly, it can make a room appear significantly bigger. This is great for kids’ rooms which are usually smaller than standard rooms.

So when choosing lighting for the room, bear in mind that you should always go for something that’s going to extend the room visually. The best way to do this is to make the room appear brighter. A corner lamp or wall sconces might just be a perfect pick, depending on the shape of your kid’s room.

Using a night light

When they are studying, kids don’t need too much light during the evening. When they are watching TV or playing with their toys, there’s no need for them to have all the lights on. That’s where night lights come in quite handy. Getting a table lamp is always a great idea, since it can be used as a night light if necessary. Still, if you want the room to look great in the evening hours as well, opting for recessed LED downlights is something you can never go wrong with. They can also leave these turned on during the whole night if they are afraid of the dark.

Be creative

Kids’ rooms are always fun to decorate since they allow you to be as creative as you want. You can play with colours and shapes as much as you like. If your child is old enough, you can let them choose these with your help. When it comes to lighting, you can also go for some shapes that kids simply adore. There are many different lamps shaped as animals, plants and other things kids love. In most of the cases, kids want their parents to choose some of these and add as many colours into the room as possible.

Having all of this in mind, lighting is something you should be very careful about when decorating a room for your child. Just make sure you try any lamp before you buy it and try to imagine how it’s going to fit into the room.

  • We never had the money to decorate the kids bedrooms. They only slept in their beds so great lighting wasn’t a huge issue

  • One fact I don’t quite agree with is, kids need plenty of light when they are doing their homework and studying. Some kids take some of their study books and read them in bed before they go to sleep. You don’t want your kids to strain their eyes trying to read without sufficient light.
