The two women who were shamed for shopping in their pyjamas have branded their male critic “sexist” and “racist.”

The pair claim they had made a quick dash to the shop to buy milk for a five-month-old baby at 7pm.

They were later shocked to find they had been photographed inside the shop by a customer who later tried to get them banned from Tesco (the UK supermarket they were photographed in).

Chris Cooke posted their picture on the shop’s Facebook page and branded them “disgusting” for dressing-down.

Now one of the women, a member of the UK’s gypsy “traveller” community who The Sun agreed not to name, has hit back.

She said: “I didn’t think there was any harm in me going to Tesco to get a few things at 7pm.

“I have a young baby and I needed to get him some milk.

“I’ll be honest, I was kind of hung-over and just wanted to get something for my baby and some snacks with my mum.

“We had already put our pyjamas on for the evening so didn’t think anything of it, we didn’t think we would be internationally shamed.

“I feel so embarrassed about it, that my picture is everywhere of me in my pyjamas.

“We were visiting family in Manchester and we just wanted to quickly get a few things.

“I’m disgusted that a man has taken our picture and put it online asking for Tesco to ban people wearing their pyjamas.

“We are travellers and we feel like it is sexist and racist.

“It’s an attack on our culture and way of life.”

The pair were wearing pink nightwear and slippers when they were photographed.

Mr Cooke posted the snap on Tesco’s Facebook page and wrote: “Dear Tesco, please can you put a rule in place that people like this will not be served in your stores.

“It’s bloody disgusting.

“I mean who doesn’t have the time to get changed into clothes to go shopping.”

The two women, from Nottingham, were visiting family in Manchester at the time and have been left upset by the backlash.

“There are hundreds of paedophiles molesting children who don’t get into the newspapers but I can’t go into Tesco in my pyjamas without being photographed.

“I don’t think it is fair asking Tesco to ban it. In my eyes it’s racist against travellers.”

“Me and my mum were chatting and our language is different from other people and they probably realised that and decided to target us because of it.

“It would be different if I had no clothes on and was walking around naked — but I had clothes on.

“I don’t feel the need to impress the man who is complaining about it.

“I don’t need to dress up, put on make-up and do my hair for him.

“I only have my husband to impress, not some stranger in the supermarket.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “Many of our customers have told us that they feel uncomfortable when they see other shoppers wearing unsuitable clothing in our stores and we do try to find a balance that everyone is happy with.

“Although we don’t have a formal dress code in our stores, we rely on our management team to use their discretion and common sense.”

  • I don’t see anything wron with it. As far as I can tell they are well covered and aren’t wearing anything with an indecent or distasteful slogan. Fair enough if they were there In a see through neglige or skimpy nighty but honestly who gives a cr**! I’ve rocked up to my work in my pyjamas before, granted it was my night off and only got called in because they were having troubles with the closing procedure but still

  • Definitely not something I would ever do – prefer day clothes for the day and pjs for bed.

    • There are cameras and phones everywhere!

  • I know of young Mums still in PJs and dressing gown who have dropped their little ones off at the school gate, especially if the youngest is only a young baby and demands a feed and it stops the crying and sucking in air at the same time. For most, Mum’s first priorities are making sure their children have breakfast, clean their teeth, are dressed in their uniforms / clothes and shoes…and get to school on time. A Mum might get partly dressed and forget to change into pants or jeans…they may have pants/leggings off that look like they are patterned pants anway. At least they aren’t almost falling out of a bikini top or bikini pants that look like g-strings.

  • We were at the supermarket near the beach a few weeks ago and my toddler pointed to a girl who was shopping in a bikini and very loudly said “look mummy, that lady isn’t wearing any clothes”.

  • Each to their own i guess. Its not something that I would do but im not really going to judge anyone else for doing so unless they were wearing a skimpy nightie or such. I live in a beachside town so people go to the supermarket in a bikini….pjs and a dressing gown are considered covering up here :)

  • I think that they are more covered than a lot of people who are “clothed”.

  • I personally wouldn’t wear pyjamas to the supermarket, or anywhere in public for that matter, but at least they are fully clothed. I am more offended at the lack of clothing some people wear shopping.

  • I have to say that I believe it is totally inappropriate to wear nightwear to the supermarket or any other store for that matter. Pyjamas are primarily for bed and lounging around round home. I fail to undnerstand how the mans comments are sexist and racist, really, everything these days seems to be perceived in this way, why for goodness sake. He w as merely voicing his opinion and asking for the store to bring in a dress code, which really should already be in place anyway. I personally find it offensive to see adults and children wandering through the supermarket etc in their pyjamas, they show a lack of respect for other shoppers and indeed themselves.

  • At least they were fully clothed – have a look at some of the strange things people wear to Wal Mart before you start complaining. I have seen a lot of young women who are not as well covered up as these two ladies were.

  • It’s clothing people! At Least they were dressed! They were not going out for an expensive dinner! Why would anyone even bother to post something about this on social media! Find a real problem in the world I say! I have been known to wear my pjs to the shops! And I have seen so many other women and men and children also do this! Winter is a big one good luck if I am getting out of my dressing gown! The gentleman that made this comment really needs to find a purpose in life or come back to reality! The comment about being hung over was made by the individual in question only after the incident so I can only comment on the incident itself!

  • The real question is why was she hungover at 7pm especially with a young baby
