The simple rice ball.  Who would have thought this yummy Japanese triangular-shaped side dish could start a trend that is sweeping Instagram the world over?

This bizarre trend sees parents and grandparents’ squishing their babies faces with their hands and posting the photos for the world to see. The adult places their thumbs under the baby’s chin and using their palms to squash the baby’s face into a shape to loosing resemble the triangular rice ball.

The trend originated with one father, Masahiro Ehara from Tokyo who squished his own baby’s face with his hands, posted the photos and the hashtag #RiceBallBaby was off and racing.

Pet owners have also gotten in on the act adding their own dog photos withe the rice ball baby look to them.
