Selecting the right perfume means more than choosing a scent that you love.

Sounds simple enough, however your choice in perfume could include as many as a thousand new fragrances each year. Additionally, the fragrance that you buy may reveal your secrets.

For decades, perfume has been recognised as the messenger of subtle statements about you.

Perfume Families:

Since the 1950s, fragrances have been advertised for their ability to highlight women’s personalities and feminine qualities. The variety of scents available are intended to capture your essence and define the qualities that make you unique, therefore it helps to understand the perfume ‘families’ and select fragrances that reveal only what you want them to say.

Floral Scents – Women who enjoy floral scents tend to be romantics. If you fall into this category, cologne and flowers go hand-in-hand.

You love writing letters, baking, and holding a kitten or puppy.

While you are social, you appreciate your alone time. ‘Romance,’ ‘true love’, and ‘happily-ever-after’ are terms that you appreciate and understand!

Fruity – If fruity and perky are amongst your go-to scents, you tend to be the life of the party. It is difficult for you to take life too seriously.

You have a childlike quality; you enjoy ‘playing’ and are active in all types of social events.

Citrus – Confident and elegant, it’s not often that one finds you without your statement accessories!

Marine (Aquatic) Scents – Women who prefer clean-scented perfumes are typically orderly and efficient, although they can also be dreamers.

Generally unsentimental, you may fall into this category if you tend toward organisation and shun frivolous items for items that are practical.

Food Scents (Gourmand) –If you are naturally drawn to sweet-scents, chocolate, ice-cream and pralines you also tend to be seductive and sensual.

Although you tend toward the exotic, you appreciate creature comforts and romance!

Asian (Oriental) Scents – As with ‘gourmand’ you appreciate sweet vanilla and spice scents. However, you lean toward mysterious and exotic aromas intertwined with frankincense, balsams and myrrh.

Sensitive, romantic, and inclined toward the spiritual, you’re often prone to drama and the intensity of romance.

Forest Scents – If mossy, woody scents describe you then you are more than likely a spirit from the past.

You love slipping into an earlier era; flappers, pink boas, and the romance of times gone by may be your cup of tea.

Incense, Tobacco, Leather, and Musk – More than likely, you are your lover’s lady! Your choice of perfume blends beautifully with a glass filled with scotch on the rocks.

You love mystery, suspense, and that cocktail with a twist!

Perfume and You:

An ad from Guerlain’s ‘Chant d’Aromes,’ 1965, states that the ideal perfume needs to “express something for a woman that she would like to express herself,” and “it must be said in a way that can be understood by men.”

With this in mind, it helps to find a perfume that says what you want it to say, not just to men, but to anyone and everyone who has a place in your life.

  • I love a fruity and citrus scent, and these readings aren’t too far off, actually.

  • I love a soft, feminine perfume. Nothing too strong.

  • Perfume can be very hit and miss for me. Scents that smell good to me (in the bottle or on someone else) invariably don’t smell the same when I wear them … I’ve given up experimenting as it is too costly, but I do have one or two that I always wear because I know they suit me.

  • Where do I find a perfume that says “I’m wearing this because I enjoy the smell and not because I want to be objectified by men”?

  • I like clean scents. Not a fan of fruity or overly floral. Funnily my favourite, most loved perfumes are ones that have been bought for me. Not necessarily ones I’ve picked myself.

  • The scents I like vary so much, so I don’t know what that says about me.

    • Me too and the scents that I like have definitely changed as I get older

  • Interesting to read, but I wouldn’t put too much value in these suggestions.

  • These scents all sound lovely. I love the idea of perfume, but I never seem to wear it, I never think to put it on!

  • I still use the perfume my late husband bought for me. I make sure I’ve always got a bottle in the cupboard. I had a customer who came into the shop and the scent of her perfume was very enticing. She sprayed some on me and the scent reminded me of a toilet deodorizer we used. I have only found 3 perfumes that suit me.
