Have you been asking your child everyday “how was school?” and getting the response “good” or “I can’t remember”?

Here are ten great questions to ask your child which will get them talking and give you more insight into their day.

  1. What was the best and worst part of your day?
  2. What did you do in Science today (art, music etc.)?
  3. What subject did you enjoy the most today? Why?
  4. Who made you smile today?
  5. What was the funniest thing that happened today?
  6. Did you find anything hard today?
  7. What games did you play at lunch/recess?
  8. What did you learn today?
  9. What’s the nicest thing you did for someone today?
  10. What are looking forward to tomorrow?

All of these questions are great conversation starters to help give you more information about your child’s day. Don’t ask every question everyday, just pick one or two and make sure you lead by example and get them to ask you questions too.

A cute little way to get the family involved is to place all of the above questions into a box and ask everyone to pick one or two at dinner time, they then get to share the answer with everyone.

How do you get your kids sharing? Any tips? SHARE with us in the comments below.

  • I found that going for a walk after dinner with my kids is what got them talking. They were away from the tv and computer and would tell me things that they normally wouldnt bother to mention. It was a great way to hear some funny stories that I wouldnt have heard otherwise.

  • Will show these to my son, they all discuss their day at the dinner table, but the eldest just answers with one word, this might help.

  • These are great questions. My kids can find a way to give one word answers to open ended questions on some days, but then on other days these sort of questions work great. Thanks for the topic ideas.

I struggle to get my son to talk about school so much. He just replies with, “I forgot” and seems really disinterested.
Thanks so much for the suggestions.

  • I always check in as the kids hop into the car “how was your day?” A pretty common question.
Mostly during dinner we talk and extend on that “what did you do in PE today or what books did you borrow from the library. The teenage son we talk about what events are coming up if there’s any exams ect.

  • Great list of questions. Open ended questions where they cant answer yes or no are best but I often get “I don’t know” or “don’t remember”

  • My tip in getting my two girls to talk about their day each day is I ask about an exciting thing they did today and this always get the conversation started, and I always turn off the car music.
