Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions.” This means dressing for your body is the #1 trick to looking (and feeling) your best. And who are we mere mortals to question one of the greatest fashion icons of all time?

Body shapes have typically been recognized as five main categories: pear, wedge, apple, rectangle and hourglass. However, you can make this unique to your own body by focusing on proportions.

Proportions are all about visual balance. If you can balance your shoulders with your hips and define your waist, you will be able to create a flattering look that shows off your assets.

Jo Blankfield, personal stylist and MC of the national High Tea Party series, shares her top tips and tricks for creating balance, no matter what your body type, below.

  1. Never cut yourself off at your widest point

The most obvious spot this applies to is across your hips. By finishing tops just above or below the widest point of the hip, you can take the attention away from the hips and gain a better leg to torso ratio balance. Other widest points to avoid cutting through are your bust and calves.

  1. Wear your sleeves at ¾ length

By shortening your sleeves to around your elbow in length, you will define your waist, or create one if you are straighter in shape. This will take the attention away from your hips, making your shoulders appear broader in relation to the rest of your body, lengthening the appearance proportionately of your torso and legs, making you appear taller and slimmer.

  1. One-third torso, two-third legs

This balance is another winner that works for everyone – looking to create this balance in your outfits will avoid any frumpiness. You can wear a shorter top, half tuck a longer style or try high-waisted pants. Accessories like necklaces and scarves can help redefine your waist, as well as layering shorter jackets/vests over longer tops.

  • About the only way clothes could flatter my shape is if I wear a tent dress to cover apeverything up. There’s nothing to flatter on this bod!

  • Thanks for the tips. There are some things I can’t wear. I am to short to wear maxi dresses and can’t do horizontal stripes.
I always have to try clothes on before I buy them so I can’t really shop online.

  • I would have to try the clothes on to decide completely if they work for me. But I would definitely give it a go. I have some wobbley bits that need some camouflage and flattering
