Forget the big theme parks and overcrowded tourist areas, if you’re planning a family holiday in the near future, let yourself get swept away in a world of untouched wilderness, undisturbed coast lines, the allure of amazing up close wildlife encounters that Kangaroo Island will present to you upon arrival.

Situated just 14kms from the coastline of South Australia, Kangaroo Island has been described as “Australia’s Galapagos” which is a title it undoubtedly deserves. Holding the title of Australia’s 3rd largest island, with a fluctuation population of just 4,400 residents, it’s truly an unmatched holiday destination within Australia for its location, lifestyle and natural wonders.

Accommodation options on the island range from free camping to 5 star luxury options and something to suit every budget in between. For peak holiday seasons, it’s preferable to book in advance, although many of the budget or free camping areas cannot be booked and are available on a first in best dressed basis, so it pays to seek out these sites early in the day if you’re relying on staying there.

Transport on the island is easiest by driving.  It takes around 2 hours to get from one end of the island to the other, and it’s important to keep in mind that driving after dark increases the risk of striking wildlife on the road, so planning your days to finish up for a relaxing evening at your campsite or accommodation is recommended. If you must drive in the evenings or night time, drive carefully and slowly as the abundant wildlife definitely don’t have road sense.

Family Things To Do On Kangaroo Island

If you’re a family who loves adventure and wildlife then you can look forward to non-stop adventure while you’re visiting the island. There are a huge number of scenic attractions, wildlife parks and refuges, and spectacular National Parks to explore.  See Sea Lions, New Zealand Fur Seals, Little Penguins, go sand boarding, photograph the remarkable rocks, explore caves, the list is endless.

  • Parndana Wildlife Park
  • Island Pure Sheep Dairy
  • Cliffords Honey Farm
  • Seal Bay Guided Tour
  • Raptor Domain Show
  • Paul’s Place Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Rare Breeds Farm
  • Penguin Pageant
  • Nocturnal Tours
  • Remarkable Rocks
  • Kelly Hill Caves
  • KI Outdoor Action

Allow yourself plenty of time to see everything on the island, at the very least 4 days would allow you to see almost all of the sites and activities at a relaxed pace. Access to the island is by the Sealink Ferry, and again, book ahead to guarantee your place.

So before you plan your next adventure, be sure to consider a visit to this spectacular holiday destination that still maintains a feeling of being relatively untouched by tourists and suburbia. Remember to pack your camera, and be prepared to get back to nature and be blown away by the beauty of what this little paradise has to offer.

  • we loved Kangaroo Island – stayed at all the light houses, and Wren, one of the wardens even had the fire alit when we came, and the kettle boiled – there are rumours that the ghosts also roam one of the lighthouses we stayed at – a fantastic place to visit, and the Remarkable Rocks, where the photo was taken, is absolutely breaktaking – esp. as its located in one of the Parks with a lighthouse stay, and you can go there when the Park is closed, and no one else is there.
