A father’s intuition saved the life of his teenage son who spent 24 hours trapped in the wreckage of his crashed car.

When his teenage son didn’t come home, Tony Lethbridge took drastic action, hiring a helicopter to help search for him – and it paid off.

Inside the mangled mess of his car, 17-year-old, Samuel Lethbridge, was pinned under the dash and had been there for more than 24 hours, reports 7 news.

When he didn’t make it home he was reported missing, but his father had a gut feeling about where to search.

“An accident happened there about five years ago or something like that and it stuck in my mind,” Tony said.

“And I thought the same thing, I thought, you know, I can’t leave him out there without looking.”

A helicopter was hired for the search and it was Sam’s uncle Michael Lethbridge who eventually spotted the wreck.

Paramedics can’t believe he survived overnight on his own with such severe injuries.

He will eventually need surgery and months of rehab, but his family are certain he’ll make a full recovery.

Sam’s father is just happy that his son is alive thanks to his gut instinct.

A parent’s instinct is something you can never explain. Amazing.

Have you ever had a similar experience thanks to your gut instinct?

  • This was one lucky young man – lucky dad had enough money to hire a helicopter himself to go looking and lucky that his will to live was as strong as it was.

  • In SA you don’t have to wait 24 hours to report a missing person. In fact they prefer to report a missing person sooner than that if they miss being seen by anybody when they should be after a couple of hours. Many have been found fairly quickly and lives saved too.

  • The police didn’t look for the boy because he needed to be missing for 24 hours before they got involved in the search

  • Lots of luck here. How many parents would have the cash available to hire a helicopter?!?! So very lucky

  • So good ! I saw this story on the Dutch news !
Yes, I was wondering as well why this man had to hire a helicopter himself as well and why the police didn’t undertake this action.

  • I wonder why the father had to hire the helicopter and why the Police didn’t just search where the father said?

  • Very remarkable. Luckily that the father thought about that precise spot! His son wouldn’t be here to tell, otherwise. The rehabilitation will be tough, I’m sure. Success!!
