A number of anti-vaxxer pet owners are now refusing vaccinations for potentially deadly diseases.

Some pet owners, who are part of the anti-vaccination movement, are under the false impression that animals could develop autism if they were to be vaccinated.

The alarming new trend, derived from the UK, has now reached Australian shores and has seen increasing numbers of pet owners opt for alternative methods of medication.

‘It is increasingly worrying how many people are analysing and making decisions based on what they can get off YouTube and Google, rather than from peer-reviewed research or legitimate scientific journals,’ Sydney veterinarian Dr Sam Kovac told The Daily Telegraph.

‘Pet anti-vaxxers are adamant that vaccinations can cause deleterious effects as severe as autism, despite the fact there are no recorded cases of animals with the condition,’ he added.

Dr Kovac said the individuals who are refusing vital vaccine treatment for their canines, for diseases such as parvovirus, don’t deserve to have animals as pets.

The parvovirus infection is a viral illness that causes vomiting, bloody diarrhoea and weight loss in dogs.

  • It is a risk, and don’t understand if it helps your pet’s health.

  • Responsibility goes hand in hand with having a pet in the family and this includes vet care and vaccinations.

  • If you need to put your dog in kennels at all, they will not accept them unless they have been vaccinated, especially for kennel cough and had appropriate ones for other medical diseases etc.

  • Surely you would speak to your vet rather than just make assumptions.

  • Seriously there are some irresponsible people out there.

  • Putting so many dogs at risk by not vaccinating them? They shouldn’t become dog-owners then!!

  • Ignorance. Would they just look at the effects of the diseases the vaccinations prevent?

  • um what???

I choose to keep my pets safe by giving them vaccinations so they don’t get kennel cough – which they can easily get from the vets if they have to go in for surgery etc.

Why do people think they are protecting children and now animals from things that the vaccines have been scientifically proven to not cause?

  • There has been a lot of info lately about not vaccinating your pet yearly but stretching it out to every 2 years.

  • If your pet is a house pet, there isn’t a great need for vaccination

  • I haven’t got the vaccinations for my dog, the dose is too large for my dog

  • How could you even tell if an animal had autism?

  • I cannot understand the mind set of an anti-vaxxer.
