Science says that if you’re always running late, you may lead a longer and more productive life.

Perhaps the only people that have a good enough excuse for always running late are busy mums. By the time you organise the kids and make sure you’re ready for the day, you can find yourself half an hour behind schedule and having to constantly apologise for not being on time. As embarrassing as it might be, science says that always being late could be the result of a number of traits that are also factors in leading a long and healthy life.

Stress Less

People who are easily stressed are typically the same people who arrive early or right on time, as they feel a constant pressure to be punctual no matter what else may be going on. Latecomers on the other hand are, in general, more relaxed and this is associated with lower blood pressure, less chance of stroke and better mental health – all factors associated with living longer! We all know that stress is the enemy of progress, so consistently being late could also indicate greater productivity and success in your professional life Kidspot reports. For multi-tasking mums, doing more than one task can make you think you have more time than you actually do, which will mean you’re perpetually late but at least you get everything done, right?

Totally Unrealistic

Diana DeLonzor, author of the book Never Late Again, says that having an unrealistic sense of time is also associated with being a more positive person. “Many late people tend to be both optimistic and unrealistic, and this affects their perception of time. They really believe they can go for a run, pick up their clothes at the dry cleaners, buy groceries and drop off the kids at school in an hour,” she said. “They remember that single shining day ten years ago when they did all those things in 60 minutes flat and forget all the other times that everything took much, much longer.”

If this sounds like you, then you may be suffering from chronic lateness, and while it may annoy everyone around you and mean you miss the start of every movie, you’ll probably be healthier and more successful in the long run.

  • I always seem to run a bit late because I am easily distracted by other things when I should be getting ready!

  • My partner is forever late, I’m the opposite, I like to be ready well before time just in case. So I’m not sure this combo makes for a long and happy life as we spend a bit of time ‘discussing’ this

  • Well this makes me a happy person! Maybe just someone telling me it’s ok to be late makes me happy. I’m very easy to please :)

  • I’m sometimes late and sometimes early, being late makes me stressed though. I have always been told it is rude

  • I am occasionally early, sometimes on time, and sometimes late. It sometimes depends on the traffic. Places that are close by I mostly walk to. Problem is if you don’t get to the traffic lights at the right time you just have to wait. It depends also how the lights are programmed. I timed how long I waited one day when I was crossing the road to catch a bus. It was 5 minutes. Lucky for me the bus was running late and I still had to wait for it.

  • Makes sense. When you’re layed ba k you’re less stressful and may run late.
My husband is rather played back, however he was diagnosed with a sky rocketing high blood pressure some years ago. So much as o we feared a stroke.
I myself are rather organised and always on time. Whilst my blood pressure is on the lower side.

    • Ha! Ha! It’s the same with my husband and me. :-)
