A WOMAN’S body has been found in a Wollongong home where a five-month-old baby boy was also discovered unharmed.

Police say the 39-year-old woman’s death is being treated as suspicious after her body was found inside the house on Lorking Street in Bellambi in the early hours of Friday morning, reports News.com.au.

A spokeswoman for NSW Police said a visitor discovered the woman — who had suffered extensive injuries from a sharp object to the head and upper body — at about 1.10am and called emergency services.

The police spokeswoman said it was unclear where in the home the baby was found.

Officers from the Wollongong Police District are forensically examining the house.

No one has been arrested over the death.

  • Glad that the baby is physically unharmed – but one wonders how much the baby saw and whether it will affect the person in later years. Hope they find the perpetrator.

  • Just horrible that you’re not even safe in your own home! I guess it’s lucky they didn’t hurt the baby, but it still has to grow up without a mum, poor darling

  • I wonder if it was pre-meditated or perhaps a break-in. If it is domestic violence and the father is involved you would think he would have taken the baby. I think he should still be obliged to pay child support if he is found.

  • I wonder how this happened.

  • Awful, but a small positive that the baby is okay.

  • How sad. Another precious life taken, effecting many around her.
Yes, 5 months is young, but old enough to leave damage to the brain development of the baby as a mum is the earliest attachment figure and essential for basic trust. I hope the baby is surrounded with loving trustworthy family figures.

  • How sad. Hopefully being only 5 months old there is minimal trauma to the baby :(
