Bunnings Warehouse management have told charity groups to put onion on bread before the sausage or sauce due to OH&S concerns.

“Safety is always our No 1 priority and we recently introduced a suggestion that onion be placed underneath sausages to help prevent the onion from falling out and creating a slipping hazard,” said Bunnings’ chief operating officer, Debbie Poole.

“Regardless of how you like your onion and snag, we are confident this new serving suggestion will not impact the delicious taste or great feeling you get when supporting your local community group,” Ms Poole said.

The “friendly recommendation” has been provided in the “sausage sizzle welcome pack” to community and charity groups that run the fundraisers.

Many people questioned the decision, asking whether anyone has actually ever slipped on onion? If so, wouldn’t the sausage and sauce be a slipping hazard also?

Is it Un-Australian?

  • Even though Bunnings pay a fortune for Public Liability Insurance they son’t want to be sued and have their name dragged through the courts and the media have a “field day” slamming Bunnings. There has been onion spilt at some locations. Sometimes it is because of the way people hold their food. Sometimes there is too much onion put in. Legally Bunnings have a duty of care and take it seriously, They are very generous with their assistance for organisations which hold sausage sizzles.

  • Why don’t they just not put onion on at all, for safety reasons. Oh, and hold tge sauce too. Let’s eliminate any slippery little suckers from falling on the floor. Just silly!

  • Personally I could care less if it was on first or last. Tastes the same.

  • What a silly thing to complain about. Just don’t put so much onion on. No matter how it’s done, it will still taste the same.

  • People are way over thinking this one! It makes no difference what goes on first, bits will still drip and fall. Before you know it, the famous Bunnings sausage sizzle will no longer be, thanks to a handful of whingers

  • Slam Bunnings because they don’t prepare the sausage sizzle in the way you want to ??
What about just getting your sausage sizzle elsewhere when it doesn’t please you ?

  • Put it in a bread roll and you won’t have this problem ????

  • Dripping grease from the onions on top of the bread will cause the bread to part once you try to wrap it round the sausage and sauce anyway. Think the OH&S should try various ways of making a sausage sanger with one slice of bread first before making a new rule. A better rule would be to make people sit down and eat the sanger there beside the tent then no-one can slip on bits falling out in the Bunnings store which has overly slippery floors in the first place.
