Carrie Bickmore has talked about her fear of giving birth after almost dying while in labour with her first child.

Carrie opened up about her experience on Wednesday night during an appearance on The Weekly With Charlie Pickering.

“I saw a psychologist when I was pregnant with Evie because I had this real fear of giving birth to Evie,” she explained, “I had nearly died after I gave birth to Ollie and I went to see a counsellor”.

“We don’t spend a lot of time talking about it, I think,” Carrie began, explaining she has anxiety and her partner, Chris Walker, has OCD.

“I went to see a counsellor and I never was like, ‘Oh I better keep that quiet from the kids.’

I just tell Ollie like I would if I was going to the dentist of the doctor that I was going to see my counsellor that day.”

“I think it’s the same with Chris’ OCD. Both of those things are a part of our life that we obviously talk about because they’re a part of our life. We don’t take special time to talk about as if it’s a strange thing or a thing to be ashamed of or anything, it’s who we are.”

Ten days after giving birth to Oliver she had a severe haemorrhage, she told Marie Claire in 2016.

“If had I not been able to head straight to a hospital and have an operation and blood transfusions, I would have died.”

“They say you forget and that’s why you go back again. I never forgot. The funniest part, it’s hard to get your head around what actually happens. A big thing comes out of a very small place,” she said.

  • Yep, there are some real birth trauma stories that should be talked about not swept under the rug

  • Kudos to her for talking about it openly and helping raise awareness. Not everyone has a smooth easy birth, credit to Carrie for getting the help she needed to help overcome her fear and give birth a second time around

  • It’s scary! Childbirth is not easy and complications can happen. This can give the mother PTSD of having another baby. I even experienced it too.

  • Good on her for seeking help and not trying to do it all alone.

  • Wow very lucky she was ok

The more we educate each other the better informed we are which hopefully encourages mothers to speak up about post partum concern, no matter how big or small

  • Good that she and her partner can be open about their issues and seek help. It’s just as going to the dentist or Gp indeed and makes it so much easier to deal with.

  • The more we speak about these things the more “normal” they become, the less taboo they become and the easier to take yourself to get the help you need because of the stigma going away

  • Speaking out and getting help is the best thing to do and it not only raises awareness,m it also helps to get it all out. I wish her all the best
