The $89 espresso machine from Kmart has beaten a $949 competitor in taste and consistency of coffee, according to CHOICE.

Australian consumer advocacy group, CHOICE, compared 34 different coffee machines based on style, ease of use, taste and price.

‘The overall score we gave the Kmart Anko Espresso Coffee Machine is not far off (and in some cases higher than) the scores we’ve given to machines that are significantly more expensive,’ the consumer organisation wrote.

‘Alongside pluses for good looks, taste and consistency of temperature, this machine does have its shortcomings and is not going to be the most solid appliance in your kitchen.’

‘In a blind taste test by our coffee taste testers (who are all professional baristas and industry experts), the Kmart machine received a score of 70 per cent on the taste test,’ the publication wrote.

‘The actual flavour and aftertaste is pretty good,’ CHOICE coffee expert Matthew Gee said.

‘If you’re a wannabe barista looking to tamp, extract and froth your way to caffeinated heaven at home, it doesn’t get much cheaper than this,’ other taste testers said.

  • I love this, the cheaper brand being better then the expensive brand in terms of coffee flavour

  • I might actually get this as husband loves barista style coffees and I’ve been against spending tons of money on a coffee machine that won’t be used so much.

  • my husband desperately wanted his own coffee machine so we got one with our wedding gift money, he hasn’t used it in 7.5 years, we got married 8 years ago

  • I’m a coffee snob so would rather be interested to try a coffee from this machine but I couldn’t see myself buying it.

  • Nice to see something that’s a sane price doing so well.

  • In general coffee pods are expensive for the amount of coffee you get from them. The Kmart Coffee Maker would be made by a major Manufacturer but we aren’t told which company it originates from.

  • So it tastes good but will break in a week? Hm…

  • Interesting! I would certainly not buy an espresso machine from $949

    • The disadvantage of these expresso machine is that those pods are quite expensive. We use quite a lot of coffee. At least 5x 250gm packs a week, so I’m happy with my Breville filter coffee machine.
