This is certainly a unique way to induce labour! We introduce to you the “coffee Potty method”…

Parenting blog, Family Friendly, has shared the technique saying it involves making a steaming hot cup of coffee and then steaming your vagina.

Coffee Potty Method Says:
1. Place plastic bowl in toilet.
2. Heat up water in a kettle.
3. Place 1 cup to 2 cups of ground coffee into plastic bowl.
4. Pour hot water over the coffee grounds.
5. Squat over the bowl and place a towel over you legs to keep the steam in.
6. Steam your lady parts for about twenty minutes.

Apparently the caffeine in the coffee is said to stimulate the uterus to contract, and the steam loosens the mucus plug and contractions begin!

Please note – we are NOT suggesting you try this, and in no way recommend it.

Dr Philippa Costley from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RANZCOG) tells Kidspot, “I’ve never actually heard of this trend before,” she begins, “but it sounds potentially dangerous, and with no proven benefits I definitely would not recommend it.”

According to the NHS, any steaming or douching during pregnancy is not recommended. “The skin around the vagina and vulva is sensitive, and steaming carries a scalding risk.”

What methods have you tried to induce your baby’s birth ‘naturally’?

  • I dunno why mums just don’t sit and wait and let nature take its course

  • I’ll never understand why some mums want to speed up labour, baby will come when baby is ready. Surprised to see it on MoMs actually, while you say you don’t endorse it, just putting it out there for mums to try is dangerous

  • First time I have heard of this, never used it personally.

  • stupidity and boiling water, not a great mix. Passing a baby through a burnt vagina, real clever

  • What a dangerous phenomenon! Especially when heavily pregnant and it’s hard to see past your bump and dealing with scalding hot water. If you’re that desperate to start labour probably best to speak to a medical professional about induction

  • Sounds like a great way to burn your vagina! Do people not realise your lady bits are sensitive and steam is hit?

  • one of mine just started natural and the other child I was admitted to hospital and induced chemically – I wouldn’t try this method at all, I think it would put me off coffee for life! and with two busy kids I need my coffee!

    • LOL! I hear you – coffee is for drinking!

  • I wonder if there are women our there who actually really use this method ? I can imagine the risk of scalding. Not a wise practice to induce labor.

  • I did not try anything to induce labour and could not stand the smell of coffee when pregnant!
