WIN 1 of 20 copies of the novel The Sisters’ Song by Louise Allan, thanks to Allen & Unwin.

Set in rural Tasmania from the 1920s to the 1990s, The Sisters’ Song traces the lives of two very different sisters. One for whom giving and loving are her most natural qualities and the other who cannot forgive and forget.

As children, Ida loves looking after her younger sister, Nora, but when their beloved father dies in 1926, everything changes. The two young girls move in with their grandmother who is particularly encouraging of Nora’s musical talent. Nora eventually follows her dream of a brilliant musical career, while Ida takes a job as a nanny and their lives become quite separate.

The two sisters are reunited when Nora’s life takes an unwelcome direction and she finds herself, embittered and resentful, isolated in the Tasmanian bush with a husband and children.

Ida longs passionately for a family and when she marries Len, a reliable and good man, she hopes to soon become a mother. Over time, it becomes clear that this is never likely to happen. In Ida’s eyes, it seems that Nora possesses everything in life that could possibly matter yet she values none of it.

The Sisters’ Song speaks of dreams, children and family, all entwined with a musical thread that binds them together.

  • All our world travels as a family, we were like a cross between the Simpsons and Married with Children.

  • At the beach one day, a storm came in. We ran for the car, but had to sit there, waiting for it to pass. My sister & I squealed and giggled like crazy, but the overwhelming memory for me was safety – we were together, Dad was there – we were safe.

  • Backyard cricket games with my cousins and Nana at her holiday house at Lake Tyers. The games seemed to go on forever and Nana never tired of playing with us. Amazingly simple times surrounded with love and laughter… family x

  • the kitchen table has always been the hub of our family, my memories centre around meals shared together followed by long laughs, a few to many drinks and good company.

  • Swimming at the beach, our little brother was trying to body surf. Caught a wave and we saw him surf over a guys bald head. No one was injured and everyone wished they had a camera to record it! Hilarious laughter ensued and a wonderful day at the beach. Thanks.

  • Running under the sprinkler on hot days and then sliding around on the grass in our small backyard. Happy carefree days of innocence

  • Taking my two little ones to the great barrier reef seeing their tiny faces glow with happiness and in ore of the beauty it beholds the I love you mummy and the hugs knowing they were in their happy element.

  • Family cuddles like no other,
Arms lovingly wrapped around one another,
