A concerned father saved his babies life after he rushed his baby daughter to hospital when he heard her ‘crying in a different way.’

The infant was diagnosed with life-threatening sepsis and put in a three-day coma.

Stu Bonsall, 45, from Burnley, Lancashire, is urging other parents to trust their instincts, even if they might ‘look an idiot’ for doing so, reports Daily Mail.

He said: ‘I could so easily have done nothing – fearing I’d be told I was over-reacting.

‘But my actions saved Megan’s life.

‘I will never regret that, I would advise all worried parents to visit their hospital. It could save your baby’s life.’

Mr Bonsall said: ‘I know all babies cry, I’m not stupid.

‘But I sensed something was different. I wanted a doctor to check her over.

Trust your instincts!

‘I would rather look an idiot and know my daughter is okay.

‘It’s a good job I trusted my gut, because in a matter of minutes, she was rushed from casualty to Manchester Children’s Hospital (MCH) with sepsis.

‘Don’t be scared of visiting your doctors or local hospital, because you never know.’

Baby Megan was diagnosed with sepsis, a life-threatening condition where the body’s response to infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs.

It is unclear how exactly Megan developed sepsis, however, it is most commonly caused by an infection.

Good on this dad for going with his gut! We quite often are too worried about looking silly, but we are our children’s voice and need to trust our instincts.

  • that is a really attentive dad. very lucky that he did rely on his gut instinct as it proved right in this case. It’s worth the trip to the doctor’s because the best case scenario is that you get sent home, reassured

  • The son of a friend of mine started with what they thought might be a cold with a slight cough. Within 12 hours he had an almost non-stop cough. He had severe croup with wheezing as well and they kept him partly propped up the first night because every time he was flat on his back he was coughing, wheezing and of course he was distressed and crying. Had he not been vaccinated for whooping cough that is exactly what it sounded like.

  • Good job, dad.
Yes, I too knew all babies cry – but this was different. Not a hungry or wet cry, not a cry I’d heard before. I was told all babies cry and retorted this one doesn’t unless it’s for a reason. Fully checked bubs over and couldn’t see anything – then a last look in the throat with a disgusted hmph – and guess what? Poor little bubs had measles, but all the spots were internal and nothing showed on the skin.
There wasn’t injections against measles in those days, so lots of time in hospital till it was over – as this day said – go with your gut feeling!

  • Glad this dad trusted his instincts ! We all should and seek/push for medical intervention when we know something isn’t right.

  • it’s a great gift to have “trusting your gut” it’s a shame that lots in the medical profession including hospital staff don’t see it that way – they are so quick to put a bandaid fix on things and send you home so you don’t clog the system only to have you back straight away as things have escalated and more damage is done in the meantime that should have been prevented if they just treated you and listened properly the first time

  • If only some medical staff would believe the parents instincts some times

    • I know what you mean – sometimes we have had to push and insist that things be checked and followed up on with medical staff. Totally understand that they are under a lot of pressure and often overloaded – but parents really do have their children’s best interests first and foremost in their minds.

  • Always trust your gut instinct and always push for answers when you know something is not right, especially when people try to dismiss your concerns.

  • Good job daddy! Just wish the doctors felt the same way!

  • wow, well done to daddy. your never an idiot or looking so silly about getting your child checked out.

my son who wasn’t in a serious condition, he was complaining about his ears being sore. i took him to the dr and all they did was to say is he eating and drinking, yes i replied. then the dr said ok well hes fine just give him Panadol. i ended up going to the hospital because my son actually had a burst hole in his ear drum.

this time i took my daughter to the dr to complain of her wheezing and crying. said the same thing so instead i took her to another dr and turned out she had croup.

sometimes doctors will take the time but others don’t.

  • So scary! I am glad this dad followed his instincts. Who knows if little Megan would still be with him otherwise.
