Half price pre-loved flat packed furniture will be up for grabs at IKEA under a new take-back scheme.

Shoppers will be offered a voucher to spend on new IKEA furniture when they return items they no longer want or need to the stores Sydney’s Tempe warehouse.

Depending on the condition of the goods, customers could earn up to half what they spent when they purchased them new, shares Daily Mail.

The scheme, which has been successfully trialed in Asian countries, was rolled out on Wednesday in an effort to reduce waste and endorse a sustainable future.

Used furniture approved to be returned for re-sale will be displayed in a section of the store for bargain hunters to browse already-assembled pieces.

Those looking to cash in on furniture they would otherwise have thrown away, need to photograph what they’re hoping to sell and fill out an online application.

From there, an IKEA employee will assess the goods’ condition and make an offer to its owner for how much they believe its worth.

The customer will then need to deliver their furniture to the store in order to redeem a voucher, which can be spent on anything of their choice – new or used.

Furniture must be a genuine IKEA product, in a usable condition, and with no more than a reasonable amount of wear and tear.

The company has ensured it will sell the second hand items for no more than what they bought them back for.

  • Another way to get cheap furniture and some other items they stock is to check their “as is” section. Sometimes there is ex-display items, others there may be slight defects. Most of them are already assembled. To my knowledge none of them are / have been secondhand.

  • This sounded great at first – then I realized it had to be IKEA furniture in the first place. So unhappy – we have great Australian mad Mountain Ash wood furniture in absolutely perfect condition and when we downsize it will probably end up out on a tip somewhere. Beautiful 3″ wood sections – I feel so bad that it won’t be kept and loved somewhere else.

    • Why would you send it to the tip?
Advertise it online as free for pick up and im sure that you will have plenty of takers.

  • Thank you to Ikea for looking to recycle old furniture.

  • What a brilliant idea. Reducing landfill and wastage. I hate getting rid of things and always want to re-home them with people who might need them. A great community service that more stores should do.

  • It is a good idea to recycle. It shall be interesting in how much ikea are willing to give back. Although it does mean reinvesting the money into more ikea merchandise. I would still prefer to use gumtree, facebook, or donate it.

  • Thanks a lot of sharing the safety recall. I think businesses should do more in assisting clients with recalls. For example with the flybuys system, they should be able to track a percentage of the customers affected and contact them via email to warn buyers.

  • Thinking some items may have to be dismantled to be able to get to the store…or you may have to have a bigger boat, no seriously a truck. lol.

  • Great idea. We give all our unwanted furniture to St Vincent de Paul in the hope that families may be able to use the pieces.
