Losing weight can be a struggle for many people, but not many know that what they drink actually makes a huge difference.

Alcohol has been described as having empty calories, with zero nutritional value.

As we approach summer and end of the year parties, we are inevitably going to be consuming a lot more of it. Unfortunately, this consumption may be a roadblock for those trying to lose weight, especially if it is consumed with high calorie food.

As alcohol is a toxin, our bodies will expend energy to remove it from our system, while the excess calories we gain from our food will be stored as fat.

In addition, some people tend to feel hungrier after consuming alcohol, and it is very likely that they would choose to eat a 24/7 fast food meal rather than a light salad at the end of a long night of drinking.

If you want to lose weight but you love your alcohol too much to give it up, try alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to cut down on calories.

You could also limit yourself to only 1 or 2 drinks, as 4 glasses of alcohol such as white wine is equivalent in energy to a meal.

While fruit juices may seem to be the healthier option, they actually contain huge amounts of unnecessary calories in the form of fruit sugars.

One glass of orange juice is squeezed from 3 to 4 oranges; that is 4 oranges’ worth of fruit sugars, without the fibre, which means that people would not even be reaping the health benefits of fruit just by drinking fruit juices.

Certain types of juices such as long life juice may not even be 100% natural juice and may just be juice concentrate, which is both unnatural and sugar-heavy.

To control the calories you take in from fruit juice, it is important to have an awareness of your drinking habits.

If you are the type of person who needs a drink with every meal, cutting out juice at meal times and replacing it with water will significantly reduce your calorie intake.

It may not seem like much initially, but it is a huge reduction in accumulated fruit sugars over time.

Alcohol and fruit juices are both potential roadblocks to weight loss, so moderation is key.

Being aware of our drinking habits and how much calories our drinks contain may go a long way towards achieving weight loss success.

  • Drinking water between the alcohol really helps. But if you are good throughout the rest of the year sometimes it is ok to relax yourself and enjoy a night here and there.

  • There are so many things out there with hidden calories…..does anyone else have a hard time keeping up with it all?


    • Yes, I do haha literally blows my mind all the information available. I never know where to start and as a result I just get so confused that I just never start :(

  • I totally agree with this. I find that water is the best drink. Zero calories and it quenches your thirst more effectively than anything else.

  • Good points here, its easy to over look the calories in drinks, but it all adds up. With all the lovely ciders out at the moment, we did indulge a bit on a recent trip to Tassie, and yes, it showed on the scales once I got back home…and that was only one cider a day for three days!

  • Oh yes I understand this completely, I’m trying to lose weight at the moment so normally steer clear of alcohol. I’m counting calories and 1 apple cider is 795 kilojoules – that’s more than lots of my snacks!! I had 4 ciders on the weekend as we were at an all day/night music festival so hopefully I haven’t done too much damage!
