The insomnia epidemic hits almost every person at some point in their life. In adults, it’s the most common sleep disorder, but among children, it’s a very serious problem.

There’s a difference between a sleepless night or insomnia, – insomnia occurs due to stress and other things happening in life. Sleep deprivation can happen because of unhealthy habits – in the age of smart gadgets, kids are exposed to smartphones and tablets. Too much screen-time reduces the quality of sleep at night, which result in poor performance at school and other activities.

A good sleep plays an important role in the development of a child’s physical and mental health and a good sleeping pattern at a young age can help in developing healthy sleeping habits in later stages of life. Also, a good sleeping habit makes kids more open to learning, improves concentration and their activity level. Sleep is also important for early child development growth.

Here Are A Few Tips To Make Your Child Sleep And Focus Better

  1.  Fixed Bed Time Routine. Our biological clock is responsible for wakefulness and sleepiness throughout the day. If you set a routine for bedtime and wake up time for your kid, your child will feel more focused and active. Prepare a bedtime routine and help your kids to keep to this.
  2. Help Your Child To Fall Asleep Faster. Take advantage of circadian-rhythm also known as the biological clock of your child. During the bedtime, a sleep-inducing chemical is released by the brain, which makes us sleep. This process depends on our biological clock, which constitutes our sleep pattern. You can set your child biological clock in a default mode permanently, just do a few simple things like dimming the light a half an hour before bedtime. This will send the signal to your child’s body, that it’s night and time to sleep.
  3. Make The Environment Cosy A peaceful environment is necessary for a quality sleep for your child, while a noisy or uncomfortable environment can disrupt the sleep pattern and make your child suffer throughout the day. Make sure that your kid is wearing comfortable clothes and there is no annoying noise coming through the bedroom. A comfortable, neat and clean mattress is what it takes for a cosy sleep environment. Make sure that the mattress your kids are sleeping on is free from dirt and debris.
  4. Help Your Child In Building Healthy Habits. A nutritious diet is one of the important factors in a good quality sleep. Serve nutritious food and avoid feeding your kids too much junk food. Do not let them use a smartphone, tablet, or TV before bedtime and rather encouarge them to play outside or wind down with a quiet indoor activity.

  • Both my children were terrible sleepers as babies. Probably because I refused to put them down and I was constantly feeding (I’m so glad I did that though) but now I have no issues with getting them off to bed. I totally have to agree with everything said in this article. We have a routine we stick to and even though it didn’t happen overnight eventually it worked out for us. I also try to fill the kids days in with lots of fun activities and play. My 18 month old has already cut back to one nap which works out SO much better in the long run, she will wake anywhere between 7-7.30 am go down after lunch 12.30 sleep for roughly an hour and a half and then by 7.00 pm she’s ready to start our night time routine and the lastest she falls asleep is 7.30. So many mums I see keep asking but why is my child cutting their second day nap? Sometimes we don’t actually realise that they are having too much sleep which is causing them to have sleep issues at night time. You just have to go with what works for your child at the end of the day!

  • All great tips; routine, calming down time, dimmed lights, healthy foods are all things we do

  • I find that no screen time an hour before bed helps so we encourage colouring in and book reading and sticker fun that last hour where children tend to lose it a bit!
outdoor play during the day that encourages creative active play like sandpit play and trampoline jumping riding a scooter anything to encourage their motor skills seems to help with sleeping of an evening.
