Hello!

Em Rusciano arrived at her daughters Primary School to attend her public speaking finals, what happened next shocked her!

When Em arrived at the school to watch her daughter perform in the finals of a speech competition she was surprised when she was stopped by the office staff and told she needed a working with children check.

She was shocked to be told she would need an escort to stay with her!

You can watch what happened below

This seems a bit extreme? I can totally understand for parents who are assisting in classrooms or helping on excursions, but really attending a performance or assembly seems a bit over board? As one person said we will soon need them just to pick our own child up from school!

Have you been caught out at school for not having a working with children check?

  • yeah of course it is extreme but when they are only looking out for the safety of the children, you can’t blame them for being over the top.

  • Far out!!! She wasn’t even working there. She was there as a spectator.
At some schools parents of little ones starting school have to take their child to the classroom and pick them up from the classroom after school. The teachers will not the children leave with anybody else unless the parents have given written consent on a special form., or in a dire emergency arranged for another parent known to the school. The school has to be notified of a change of arrangements. Up until the next applicable the child can be picked up from the school gate under the same rules. I don’t know how many schools use this method but I know of two private schools in SA.

  • How ridiculous – it’s understandable if you are working there maybe. Even the tuck shop ladies have to have a working with children check – bet there’s very few mums now doing voluntary tuck shop duties like used to happen in my day. The police checks cost a fortune and have to be renewed at least every year, sometimes twice a year. No wonder costs at school are sky-rocketing.

  • Better get one in case you need to drive past a school or something?

  • A working with children’s check is appropriate when you assist/help/work at school, but for attending a performance ?? that’s extreme indeed !

  • No, that’s ridiculous – NOT the purpose of the checks!

  • You dont need a working with childrens check to “watch” a performance. Imagine if we all had to do that with a big performance such as senior choir at an entertainment centre or a wakakirri concert that holds over 1000 patrons watching over 3000 kids perform …. this is a bit ridiculous IMO

  • Em just made me laugh with this video! But WWVP checks are important and the process and reasons should be clear.

    • It appears maybe not clear in this case?

  • No! Really? It looks very extreme indeed!!

  • I guess that is the direction the world is heading to try and keep our kids safe…. seems crazy but I can see where they are coming from…

  • I agree with Tracy Hardy – a working with children check should be a requirement if you are helping/working at the school, but not if you are attending a performance or assembly. It seems a bit extreme.
