Same-sex couples in South Australia can legally adopt children from Friday.

Finally changes to adoption legislation come into effect as of today and same-sex couples can now apply to adopt a child together in SA.

Child Development Minister Susan Close will meet with same-sex couples and their families at Parliament House this afternoon to mark the shift, reports 9 news.

A bill containing the changes was among a number to pass SA parliament late last year aimed at ending discrimination against the LGBTIQ community.

Greens MLC Tammy Franks, who introduced a subsequent amendment to require any services that refused treatment to be placed on a public list, said the debate was not easy but overwhelmingly the house supported equality, reports ABC news.

“It’s great to see four bills around equality for LGBTIQ South Australians passed through the Upper House, having already passed the Lower House. We now know they will become law,” Ms Franks said.

Great news. Let’s hope other states follow their lead very soon!

  • I don’t have a problem with these couples at all but raising a child is a big commitment and these situations can impact greatly on a child’s development. If they are raised in a great community, that would help reduce the stigma that these children will face.

  • I honestly don’t understand why it’s taking so long to give same sex couples the same rights as heterosexual coupkes

  • I think this could be a good thing- there are so many people who shouldn’t be having kids having them and for people who have fought and struggled to be able to have one of their own? Well they’ll love and appreciate their little treasure all the more.

  • That is such great news, wonderful.

  • Not too many adoptions in Australia these days. I would feel sorry for the child. Having grown up in a house that wasn’t the same as every other kid’s at school, I know how badly you can be bullied and teased because you are different. Would hate to inflict this on a child I loved.

  • Adoptions are rare in this country anyway. But I pity the child – when you are being brought up and your home, mum or dad is different to the norm around you then you get teased and bullied at school and you resent those that cause it usually your home, mum or dad or different values.

  • Brilliant. Fantastic. Yay. A small positive step for adoption. There are so many deserving people that can’t have children, and so many poor children that need loving parents. It shouldn’t matter whether they’re same sex though or not. It should be easier for all couples to adopt.

  • Are there many adoptions within Australia?

  • adoption should not be based on a couples sexuality but on whether they can provide a loving, nurturing and supportive life for the child.

  • Regardless they will probably have a long wait before they are successful. There is/was an upper age limit too. There is very few babies available for adoption comapred to what there was 40 + years ago. Back then you could expect to wait 3 + years. Mums now have a lot of financial support so are less likely to offer them for adoption.

  • I don’t know Australia so well yet. In which other Australian states is this reality already ?

  • It should never be about the sexual orientation of the parents but if they are responsible enough to adopt. The adoption agencies should screen them just the same as usual

  • Absolutely the right thing to do – adoption should be based on the family’s ability to provide a safe and loving environment for a child and that is not dictated by the gender of the parent(s).
