UK experts are now saying there could be some benefits to slouching – and it could actually help to keep our spine in shape.

Physiotherapists at the University Hospital of North Tees in Durham concluded that slump-sitting postures can help to increase the amount of fluid in between spinal discs – helping to reduce stiffness in joints.

Australian studies have also shown that slouching for short periods can help to relax muscles in the core and legs.

So mums don’t stress when the kids begin to slouch!

Whether you’re prone to sitting upright or to slouching, the key is to switch up your positions regularly, and take a break when you can to stretch your legs and go for a walk.

  • Not only is it not great for you long term if done all the time, it looks bad too. But I am guilty of doing it so I cant really say much lol

  • I’m a big sloucher. I can’t help it. I also remember as a kid my parents constantly saying to me “put your shoulder back”. My shoulders are still slouched forward as it’s uncomfortable to put them back. My posture is terrible all round lol.

  • The key words here are sometimes. If they slouch all the time it does become an issue. I know because after years of slouching, I have developed scoliosis in my upper spine. It’s so ugly and unfixable

  • Too much slouching isn’t good as it affects your shoulders too according to some physiotherapists.
