Headphones marketed for children exceed their advertised volume limits, an investigation has found.

An expert warns exposing them to these levels could leave youngsters with ‘the hearing of a 70-year-old by the time they’re 50’.

Researchers tested six headphones – PuroSound, LilGadgets, Snuggly Rascals, Peppa Pig, JVC Tinyphones and Kidz Gear. When used with smartphones and tablets, most of them limited the volume to their claimed levels, shared Daily Mail.

All of them, apart from the PuroSound and Kidz Gear ones, exceeded their advertised limit by at least three decibels when plugged into a laptop or CD player.

Hearing expert Dr Michael Stone, of Manchester University, said a safe volume for children is around 80 decibels. Higher than that, ‘they could end up with the hearing of a 70-year-old by the time they’re 50,’ he said.

Please be aware what brands you are purchasing and ensure they are doing the job they claim to do.

  • Very worrying., good information.

  • Luckily my kids only use headphones at school and rarely at home. Their headphones are below the highest safest level so no worries.

  • Good to know about the brands doing the right thing but the other ones should be taken off the shelf.

  • I tell my 7yr old to turn hers down contantly. Perhaps having them off altogether is the best option.

  • I’d prefer to avoid headphones altogether, tbh.

  • I went out with friends who had children a few years ago. I was sitting in the front next to the driver.
A boy about 10 – 12 y.o. had a device playing music and he had headphones on. I could hear the music even with noisy traffic around us. I hate to think how his ears may have been affected

  • This has been known for some time. But a good reminder for all not just the kids
