A family has been left shattered after a father has sadly drowned while trying to save his son.

It has been reported the young boy ran into trouble while kayaking in a dam.

The dad jumped into the water after his son, who was kayaking in the Wyangala dam near Cowra, and fell into the water at around 6pm on Friday, News Corp reports.

Police have confirmed the 38-year-old was attempting to rescue a nine-year-old boy.

He sank below the water and did not resurface but another person was able to save the child.

His body was sadly recovered on Saturday.

Our thoughts are with the family and all involved. Heartbreaking.

  • Such a tragedy for the entire family. Maybe the Dad didn’t have enough oxygen in his blood and lost consciousness before he drowned. There was a tragedy awhile ago when a Dad was practising diving and testing how long he could stay underwater before he needed to re-surface. His wife was timing him. He took a quick breath and dived under again – too soon and didn’t inhale enough oxygen. Autopsy proved that he fainted/lost consciousness as a result of that, then drowned. His wife didn’t notice soon enough and had to take their child inside before diving into the pool and drag him to the surface.
As she was going inside she yelled out for help and for somebody to call an Ambulance. Fortunately a neighbour heard her and did that before going in and helped her get him out of the pool quicker than she could have on her own. He couldn’t be rescusitated despite everybodys’ attempts while waiting for the Ambulance and they had no success either.
