Hobart has become the first capital city in the nation to ban single-use plastics, including takeaway food containers and straws.

City of Hobart councillors voted on Monday night in favour of a by-law to support the ban and impose fines on those that don’t comply.

The by-law targets petroleum-based plastic containers, cups, cup lids, straws, utensils and packets used for sauces and other condiments.

“This will add to the way people perceive Hobart across the world as a city that cares about the environment and its people,” Councillor Bill Harvey, who moved the motion, told The Mercury on Tuesday.

But it won’t come into effect until late this year or early 2020, pending the outcome of a 21-day public consultation to be set in motion by the director of local government.

Under the regulation, Hobart food retailers may be hit with fines of up to $1300 if they offer plastic food containers and utensils.

  • Some of the containers in the photo you can wash and re-use at least once. If not frozen they will at longer. The same applies to putting them in the microwave oven. Some of the drink bottles can also be washed and re-used a few times, some many times. Some can be rinsed or washed and put in your recycle bin. It is surprising the things that are made from plastic – including dog registration discs. I know a lady who worked at a place where they were made.

  • I think it’s a great idea, straws end up in the ocean and cause such terrible things to the poor sea creatures that eat it or get poke with. Our marine life is very fragile and we should do all we can to protect them.

  • This is great, but they will need to manage the transition carefully.

  • Sounds like take away shops will go fast out of business in Hobart.

  • I imagine this will take time and consultation as alternatives are explored. Clearly times are changing, but it will be a process.
