Flying with a baby can be a real struggle for parents, but one flight attendant found a genius way to make sure everybody had a pleasant flight…

With a return to domestic travel well and truly underway, ask any parent about their experience flying with young children and you’re almost guaranteed to hear a horror story. Whether it’s a nappy disaster, non-stop tantrum or the disapproving stares of other passengers, the whole process can be extremely stressful. A passenger has shared her story after a mum struggling to cope when her one-year-old daughter became distressed on board was helped by a flight attendant, who found a genius way to diffuse the situation…

A Mum In Need

Carrie Jaboor, a passenger on US-based carrier Southwest Airlines saw a mum struggling to settle her baby daughter and says she couldn’t help but sympathise.

“There was a mother and her two young girls in front of me on the plane, and the baby suddenly had a very loud crying fit that wouldn’t stop,” she wrote on Scary Mommy. “The mother looked so stressed and it just made my heart break for her because nothing was helping the little girl. When I saw the flight attendant ask her to step to the back, I could tell the mother (and myself) thought she was going to get into trouble.”

It turned out that the crew had a clever trick up their sleeve, soothing the baby girl by blowing bubbles for her. “I looked back and saw him blowing bubbles for the little girl until she stopped crying,” Carrie wrote. “There are some seriously kind people in this world.”

All Too Much

Carrie says that the mum was upset by the situation and was also comforted and reassured by flight attendants. “He was also giving tissues to the mother and consoling her as she was crying too,” she wrote.

Comments on the post said that simple acts of kindness make all the difference when travelling with children. “Being a new parent can be quite overwhelming,” one comment said. “Thank goodness for kind-hearted people!” “Sometimes with all the nastiness happening in the world we need to stop and focus on the kindness and situations such as this,” said another.

We completely agree! How amazing is this flight attendant? We’re sure that any parent would be forever grateful for this kind of service and attention.

  • Awww that’s just beautiful :). My handy hint for flying with babies is to breastfeed (or offer a bottle) at the take off and descent. Babies don’t know how to breath to stop their ears from popping with the pressure. If you have older children you can also offer a lollypop or something that they need to suck on. This prevents that popping feeling and possible earache.

  • Some air crew are fabulous with children, I remember our Daughter crying a lot on a Melbourne to Singapore flight and the cabin crew took her in their arms and walked her up and down the aisles, it was so helpful and caring of them

  • I don’t get why people get narky at crying babies on planes. Or anywhere. It just stresses out the mum and that makes it impossible to calm bubs down. Babies cry. Get over it. We need more bubble blowing flight attendants in the world.

  • That is so sweet! I have had some very rude flight attendants when travelling with kids so this is great to hear!

    • Some people have such a gift for being and kind and some people have a lack of it!

  • Great work from the flight attendant. Everyone has been great when I’ve had to fly and so far we’ve escaped any disasters but kind passengers sitting nearby making faces and playing peekaboo probably contributed to this a lot.

  • When they have time Flight Attendants are wonderful in settling little ones. A friend of mine flew with a baby who was teething and seemed to have an upset tummy too. The Attendant took the baby, settled him and brought him back to his Mum when he went to sleep. The Mum was very grateful but realised bubs would need a nappy change by then. They carry nappies on the plane and the attendant had changed the nappy then washed her hands thoroughly then used hand sanitizer. We could smell the sanitizer. It was overpowering so she must have used plenty. She must have washed her hands again because when she came past a couple of minutes later we couldn’t smell it at all.
