Disney is launching its own streaming service so you’ll have access to all your favourite films 24/7!

Disney is set to launch its own streaming service later this year, Disney+,  with the app having exclusive rights to Disney and Pixar films in the US. New releases, such as Toy Story 4 and Frozen 2, will feature alongside film favourites, and subscribers will also have access to The Disney Channel and Disney Junior!

Exclusive Access

Many have asked why the company would choose to create their own streaming service when many titles are currently available on Netflix, but doing so allows the film giant to charge subscribers directly for exclusive access to their catalogue. There is also concern around the availability of Marvel and Star Wars films, with the company still in the process of deciding whether to move them to the new Disney app, continue to licence them to providers like Netflix, or come up with another specially designed service.

Disney CEO, Bob Iger, said that the launch of the app signals the start of an exciting chapter for the brand. “The service is going to combine what we call library product, movies, and television with a lot of original product as well,” he said. “It will house the entire motion picture library, so the movies you speak of that traditionally have been kept in a ‘vault’ and brought out basically every few years will be on the service.” The introduction of Disney+ would mean that many titles currently available on other streaming services would disappear…

While there are no plans yet to launch the service in Australia, Disney fans down under can still enjoy all their favourite films via Netflix…for now!

    Bored of Netflix.

  • Nah, I wouldn’t subscribe! All these never ending show/movie watching apps aren’t very helpful, as they can become addictive. Young people are spending so much of there time in front of a screen.

  • My daughter would definitely love this. She would want to watch it all day long… and I would be sitting right beside her watching it, ha ha. There are so many amazing Disney movies. All in moderation though, would need to set up some ground rules first if we ever subscribed.
