A grandfather accidentally picked up the wrong boy at his grandson’s kindergarten before taking him for an injection.

The confused elderly man was spotted on CCTV footage taking his grandson’s classmate from their classroom and out of the kindergarten’s gate on June 8 in Guiyang, southwest China, Chinese news site Hangzhou.com.cn reported.

Kindergarten staff were left in a panic when the mother of the taken child, identified only by his first name Hongyu, failed to find her six-year-old son at the preschool, shares 7 news.

During their brief time together, the grandfather took the boy shopping and even took him to the hospital for a flu vaccination after being told his grandson needed one.

The man was not familiar with his own grandson because he had just moved to the city from the outskirts.

The young boy had reportedly told the man that he was not his grandfather but as he is partially deaf, he struggled to hear him.

Adding to the confusion, Hongyu’s name is very similar to that of the man’s real grandchild named Hongrui.

The headmistress said that the school was liable and was willing to offer compensation, while the grandfather indicated that, in light of the injection, he was willing to arrange a full medical check-up for Hongyu.

It took four hours before a parent in a WeChat group identified the elderly man as his father and realised that he must have taken the wrong child home.

  • wow….they must have very lax rules in China

  • Oh dear. Sounds like better checks need to be in place for pick ups and authorised people for each child. Why on earth would you send someone unfamiliar with what your child even looks like to pick them up?

  • A completely understandable mix-up. All involved are working to fix the problem and that’s exactly what should happen

  • It must have been a traumatic time for all concerned. The grandfather must be feeling bad about what happened. Hopefully this will all die down and one day they will have a laugh about it. Maybe on the boy’s 18th birthday

  • Oh wow, imagine how the granddad would have felt

  • Wow, obviously they aren’t as strict with pick up procedures in China! At my daughter’s school the kids aren’t let out of the area of their classroom until the parent (or other nominated person) is sighted. I don’t understand how they could let this happen!

  • Wow, trying to make sense of this, and how this came to happen is interesting. If the child claimed the man wasn’t his Grandfather, how was he able to leave with him? So much about this is wrong, and yet quite frightening. Imagine the shock and horror of the boy’s Mum when he was not there at pick up.

  • There are so many things wrong here ththaththat I just can’t address them all…. how does this even happen?

  • why would you let you child be picked up by the grandfather if he didn’t know him very well, why did the actual grandchild not speak up? Why was there not an arrangement made so they knew to meet each other?

  • Unbelievable! If the grandfather couldn’t recognize the child very well and he was also a little deaf, why do you let him pick up the kid and bring him to have a flue shot?

    Reply

  • Oh dear, you would think he would know his grand-son!

  • This is shocking! Particularly in regard to the flu shot, some people with certain conditions and/or allergies are unable to have it – could have been a far more serious outcome!

    • It would appear there was a lack of identity checking – most concerning!

  • That’s horrific. What if he had already had a flu needle and they gave him another. That is just woeful. It makes you wonder doesn’t it. The poor mother must have been beside herself. Just horrible.

  • Oh my goodness, I’m sure the child care centre is going to improve their checking and signing out system. Not so smart from the parents to approve for granddad to pick up their child he doesn’t know very well yet !

  • This is actually awful – the poor child! I bet there were some stern discussions later on!
