Chezzi Denyer shared recent health scare her daughter Sailor had experienced, urging parents to take action sooner rather than later.

The mum of two, married to TV personality Grant Denyer, shared a photo of her seven year old daughter’s flared up arms, a result from being tested for allergies.

“These are Sailor’s little arms pricked with different drops of various things we suspect she could be allergic to,” she writes.

The concerned mum reveals that her daughter’s reactions “are worse than they were three years ago,” adding that she has now developed more allergies.

“She’s also now developed a reaction to peanuts for the first time. Also oranges and avocados. So we’ll carry an Epi-pen.” Chez added, she is also very allergic to grass.  Poor little poppet.

Any parent with a child with allergies knows what this photo is about. Allergy testing. It hurts. It’s scary. It’s hard to watch for a Mum. It’s itchy, irritating. It’s frustrating. But, it can be life saving. Yes, allergies can be fatal. And the number of people developing serious allergies in Australia is skyrocketing.. And really, we have no idea why. It’s petrifying for parents. Living on edge that one small cross contamination with a nut, a grain, a fruit, a chemical could kill your child in an instant. Part of my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was related to me myself having an anaphylactic reaction when Sailor was 18months old. And they still haven’t been able to tell me exactly what caused it. Only that my histamines were through the roof because the previous owners of the house we bought had cats. I had eaten and drunk things that day that pushed my immune system over the threshold, and boom I arrive at hospital close to death, unable to breathe with swollen lips, eyes closed over and swollen tongue. They cut my clothes off me and put the paddles on my chest and at the same time gave me a large shot of Adrenalin. And in 6 hours I was released home under the guidance of an Allergist who tried to work out how all of a sudden at the age of 32 I had such a severe reaction. It was terrifying. As my Husband drove me to hospital, I was throwing up and struggling to breathe. And it happened so quick. It was so unexpected. Thankfully, my Husband was able to be calmed by my Sister Linda who knows firsthand about allergies due to serious allergies with her eldest daughter. Her advice to Grant at that time, and Grant’s quick thinking and driving skills saved my life that day. I remember it well.. But this post isn’t about me, it’s about my little Sailor and every other child and parent dealing with allergies.. These are Sailor’s little arms pricked with different drops of various things we suspect she could be allergic to. And unfortunately her reactions are worse than 3 years ago. She’s very allergic to grass we have around our house. She’s also now developed a reaction to peanuts for the first time. Also Oranges and Avocados. So we’ll carry an Epi-pen…

Chezzi shared in a seperate post where Sailor had come into contact with peanuts while the family where on holiday.

“Sailor had a bad allergic reaction a week ago. Her little throat started to close up. She had hives. We had to act fast. It’s not the first time, but it was worse this time. I wasn’t expecting it. We think it was cross-contamination of some pistachio nuts on some tongs at a hotel we stayed at.”

Speaking to 9Honey, Chezzi explained that she was aware of Sailor’s slight allergy to cashews, but was shocked to learn how much had changed since she was last tested for allergies three years ago.

“We knew she had a slight moderate allergy to cashews. We are very careful, but we also travel a lot, and I became complacent about cross contamination, like at the buffet.”

“Until it happens to you don’t quite understand the gravity of the situation.”

Chezzi advises parents to be extra cautious if they notice their children with any reactions, as simple as it may seem.

“If you see any signs like hives around the mouth or if they complain that something they’ve eaten has made their mouth feel funny, or if they have itchy eyes, or sneezing a lot, I fully encourage people to get them tested.”

What a terrifying experience.  It certainly made me stop and think that I REALLY should take my son for some allergy testing, he seems to often break out with random reactions, mainly on his skin.

  • Allergies can develop at any age, I started having reactions as an adult. It’s hard to eliminate the source entirely as you never know if it’s been used as a stock, oil or prepared on the same surface.

  • We are well aware and very careful.

  • It certainly is very scary from first hand knowledge.

  • I’ve had some concerns lately. Another thing to ask at the next doctor’s visit.

  • This is something we’ve never had trouble with – but I cn imagine hw scary it is for people with kids with allergies.

  • Oh sweetie. I’ve never been tested for allergies. How expensive is that? Does Medicare cover it?

  • Thankfully no signs of allergies in my eldest yet but I’m worried about wheat protein allergies in my youngest. She has only just started solids but every time I eat a wheat product, she violently vomits after feeds.
But also I’m 32 this year and in the last 2 yrs I know my allergies to pollen & mould spores have dramatically increased. Now my chest hurts like someone is compressing it.

    • Your daughter may have the gene that reveals Coelic Disease. It is usually hereditary. You can have it and it not make you ill but still be damaging your intestines. Another symptom which you yourself or the baby’s father could have is iron deficiency., also failing to keep at a reasonable weight. I know people who have it and they are definitely under weight. Your body fails to absorb and use some of the nutrition in the food you eat. There is a lot of products have wheat in them that you would never think to check the ingredients of including salad dressings, sauce, chocolate. I know a child who has one of the genes but doesn’t have Coelic Disease at this stage.

  • My brother suffered continuously with hayfever so Mum got a referall anf took him to an allergy specialist. He is still highly allergic to grasses, especially those that continuously have seeds on them and those in dry areas that that spread a lot of dust etc. He is slightly allergic to eggs and nuts. He can have 2 eggs a week with no side effects. I know a girl whose voice goes very deep and husky if she eats nuts at all. A child who is highly allergic to iboprufen which is an ingredient in Nurofen, Advil and a few other medications. No skin to skin contact for 12 hours after a person has consumed or handled any. It causes balance problems. Too much can be fatal.

  • it’s amazing how much a little person’s allergies can change even over the course of 1 year – my daughter spent 6mths coughing repeatedly every night until a dr referred her to an allergy specialist. She was then diagnosed as having allegies to weeds, grass, dustmites, pollen and raw egg. 12 months later she had no allergy to raw egg but the others remained! – I always suggest now if you have a child who has a sniffly nose and a cough that doesn’t go away after 3mths to get a referral to an allergy specialist as that is probably what is causing the sniffly nose and cough!

  • I hope they get to the bottom of the causes of allergic soon it’s such a scary thing for kids and parents.

  • Wow, just wow! It’s concerning how much more prevalent and serious that allergies are becoming. They were unknown when I was a kid and also when I had my own kids. I think health authorities are onto it now tho, they are recommending kids be exposed to certain foods at earlier ages, in the hope it will build resistance and reduce allergies. It would be terrifying to be in the situation that Chezzi found herself!

  • Allergies can so be scary, especially when kids respond with anaphylactic shock ! Luckily we don’t have such severe allergies in our family.
