What if you could clean your home without noxious fumes?  At a fraction of the price? In a more environmentally friendly way? Safe for your children and pets? Sound too good to be true? Well it isn’t!  It can be done!

You don’t need to break your budget on cleaning products.  There are lots of ways of creating homemade cleaning products.  Not only are they cheap,  they also perform to high standards – with the added bonus of being able to be tailored to your needs.

Furniture polish

Simply mix together 3 parts vegetable oil to 1 part vinegar and you have perfect furniture polish!  Apply with a cloth to your piece of furniture and buff off with another clean cloth.  Look at the shine!

Washing Liquid

Mix together 1.5 cups of Lux Soap Flakes, 1 cup of baking soda, 1/3 cup salt with two cups of boiling water (you may need to experiment with the amounts to gain the consistency you are looking for).  Allow to cool slightly and add a ½ scoop to your washing machine.

Spray ‘n’ wipe

One word.  Vinegar.  Vinegar is a natural disinfectant and will remove stubborn stains.  Pour vinegar on a clean cloth and rub over the surface.  Instant clean!  You can also place the vinegar into a spray bottle to use and add an essential oil of your choice (lavender, peppermint etc.) to create your own cleaning fragrance.

Hand Sanitiser

Mix together 1 part rubbing alcohol and 1 part baby lotion.  You may need to experiment a little with the quantities to get it to the consistency you require.  Put it into a little squeezable bottle and you are set to go!

Sanitising hand wipes/bench wipes

Get a packet of good quality paper towels. Place into a container.  Pour in 1 part rubbing alcohol and 1 part baby lotion over the top of the paper towels.  The paper towels should soak up the liquid – you may need to add more towels/liquid to get the consistency right.  Close the lid on the box and you can use them straight away!

Liquid hand soap

Bring 2 cups of water in a saucepan to the boil.  Add ½ cup of Lux Soap Flakes.  Stir until soap is melted. Remove from heat and stir after 10 minutes, and a couple more times before you go to bed.  Stir again once the next morning.  Pour into soap hand pump.  Really cheap and makes enough for 3 bottles.

Toilet & Bathroom cleaner

Baking Soda and Vinegar.  That’s it! Sprinkle the baking soda around your toilet bowl and spray on the vinegar. You can add some essential oil to the vinegar if you prefer for a cleaning fragrance.  Clean as usual.  Finished! Cheap!

Dishwashing liquid

Fill an old dishwashing liquid bottle ¾ full with vinegar.  Add ¼ of lemon juice.  Shake well.  Add your usual amount to the dishwater and wash as usual.  The detergent will not ‘foam’ as a commercial detergent – but it does clean squeaky clean!

So with a little planning, you can make some serious homemade cleaning products, all by yourself for a fraction of the price!

  • Great ideas but a word of warning with vinegar. If you have someone visit often that takes seizures please check with them or their carer if Vinegar can be a tigger for them.

  • I like the idea of diy disinfectant wipes, but if I were to make my own I’d prefer to use cloth instead of paper towel to make them more sustainable and cheaper over the long run too.
